Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated, detailed, and energetic Church Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our congregation, staff and visitors. In this vital role, you will be responsible for ensuring all church facilities are well-kept, hygienic, and presentable at all times. Your proactive approach to cleaning and maintenance will contribute to the positive experience of everyone who enters our space. First Congregational UCC of Oconomowoc is a well established and growing church, with a membership of approximately 300. Our facilities are also used by Hearts and Hands Preschool, Oconomowoc School System for GED classes and community organizations, including AA, Boy Scout Troop, RISE, and the Oconomowoc Community Choir. The ideal candidate will have a strong professional cleaning knowledge and experience and observation skills with ability to prioritize needs.

Responsibilities
- Cleaning and regularly sanitizing all areas of the church building for daily and weekly use.
- Daily/weekly/yearly/cleaning observation and maintenance.
- Respond to cleaning issue that arise.
- Review church calendar daily, weekly and monthly for activities. Specifically on call for special events (e.g. weddings, funerals).
- Perform thorough cleaning of all church areas, including sanctuary, sacristy, meeting rooms, family room, fellowship hall, kitchens, classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, entrances, atrium, library, elevator, storage facilities, common spaces, and stairs and stairways using commercial cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Conduct routine janitorial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, trash removal (keeping inside garbage cans and recyclables bins emptied, clean and bacteria free), disinfecting surfaces to uphold high standards of cleanliness.
- Maintain floors through buffing, stripping, waxing, polishing to preserve surface quality and other floor care procedures to ensure safety and aesthetic appeal.
- Assist with light custodial repairs and basic facilities maintenance to address minor issues promptly.
- Perform as needed cleaning of windows, windowsills, carpet stains, removal of bugs from light fixtures.
- Attend to easy access light replacement, cobweb removal; door, chair, small plumbing and drywall repairs; equipment maintenance and repair; polish and repair minor wood imperfections; remove scuffs from walls and floors, strip and wax linoleum floors.
- Some minimal to moderate effort of outdoor activities may be necessary such as sweeping sidewalks, washing reachable outside windows.
- Recognize, report and record any maintenance or safety hazards to a member of the Staff and/or Administrative Ministry.
- Manage supplies inventory; restock cleaning products, paper goods, and other essentials as needed and launder mop heads and towels as needed.
- Support special event setups by moving furniture or equipment and ensuring the space is prepared for gatherings or services.
- Follow safety protocols during all cleaning activities to prevent hazards and ensure a secure environment for staff, members, and visitors.

- Proven experience in commercial cleaning or janitorial roles with a strong focus on maintaining cleanliness standards.
- Skilled in custodial tasks such as floor care—including buffing—and general facilities maintenance.
- Knowledge of industrial cleaning techniques and equipment operation.
- Knowledge and experience in professional commercial cleaning methods and procedures, cleaning compounds and chemicals and safe handling practices, floor care techniques and facilities maintenance practices and safe operation of cleaning equipment and machinery and observation skills with ability to prioritize and resolve all custodial takes.
- Knowledge of and adherence to safety guidelines and protocols with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when handling cleaning chemicals, opeating cleaning equipment and ensuring that all areas are free from hazards to maintain a safe environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while adhering to safety guidelines.

- Must have functional speech, vision and hearing, with ability to:·
- Read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.·
- Identify and resolve issues quickly, whether it’s a malfunctioning cleaning tool, an unexpected spill, or a safety hazard. Demonstrate resourcefulness in handling challenges and finding practical solutions to maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds and sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out duties and perform physical tasks.
- Perform essential maintenance to facility or equipment which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: repetitive tasks, walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing and semi-reaching to full-reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; lifting; carrying, working in narrow and/or confining spaces: overhead, and at ground level; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lying on stomach and/or back for extended periods and maintain high energy levels throughout shifts.
- Perform general cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, floor care activities such as buffing, stripping, waxing, and polishing to preserve surface quality, and trash removal across assigned areas.
- Work in both warm and cold environments and in conditions that will create dirt and dust and with cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.
- Clean, troubleshoot and repair cleaning equipment, such as vacuums, floor scrubbers, and other machinery, ensuring they are always in good working order and operate electrical or motorized equipment as needed.
Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
