Flexographic Machine Operator 1

Shift: 1st or 2nd
Pay rate: $18.00 to $28.00 an hour depending on experience.
SUMMARY:
Operate and set up wide web flexographic printing presses; ancillary equipment; and perform other departmental and facility-wide tasks in a team environment. Operate equipment to define standards and products specifications; perform changeovers, troubleshoot, and perform cleaning and minor machine repairs.
Additionally, this position must promote an environment that fosters safety, teamwork, open communication, quality, and productivity in alignment with the “New Excelsior Statement.”
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.) Change press plates or cylinders as required.
2.) Clean ink system, plates, cylinders, and other machine parts as necessary.
3.) Clean printing presses or make minor adjustments using hand tools.
4.) Collect and inspect samples during print runs to identify necessary adjustments.
5.) Examine job work orders to determine customer specifications, quantities to be printed, base material used, ink requirements, or special printing instructions.
6.) Prepare, load and feed base materials through the “web”/machine and adjust and feed tension controls.
7.) Input production job settings into workstation terminals that control automated printing
system (OCS).
8.) Monitor automated printing system (OCS)/screens for print and/or machine issues.
9.) Accurately document and complete necessary forms, including records of quality checks and finished product.
10.) Maintain a clean work area and follow all environmental/health/safety and work rules and regulations.
11.) Weigh or measure materials used.
12.) Notify supervisors or other personnel of production problems.
13.) Perform other miscellaneous job duties; department or facility tasks and related functions as needed. For example, facility wide cleaning.
REQUIREMENTS:
1.) High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent training desired. Job requires exerting effort toward mastering tasks in a skilled trade.
2.) Previous work experience in a manufacturing environment desired and working with minimal supervision (self-starter).
3.) Basic understanding of machines and tools used, including their design, use and issues of minor maintenance and repair.
4.) Controlling operations of equipment and required support systems (OCS, auto clean, rewind/unwind, AS400, Excel spreadsheets). The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to an exact position.
5.) Watching gauges, dials, indicators to ensure proper machine function. Listening/watching for noises or signs of mechanical issues.
6.) The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of your body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing.
7.) Visual color discrimination, including shades of colors and brightness and the ability to see details at close range. The ability to imagine how something will look (images, patterns, etc.)once it is moved around or rearranged.
8.) Conducting inspections of products or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
9.) The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions. Finding relationships among seemingly unrelated events (for example: troubleshooting machine issues).
10.) Basic English verbal and written communication skills.
11.) Basic mathematical and computer skills.
12.) Ability to pay close attention to detail which requires being thorough and taking care while completing work tasks, especially following job specifications and monitoring quality.
13.) Ability to demonstrate respect and open communication. Work in team-oriented environment and be flexible and self-managed in accordance with the “New Excelsior Statement.”
14.) Ability to follow all safety and work rules, policies, and procedures. Maintain a clean work area.
15.) Safely operate machinery, material handling equipment, hand tools, etc. according to training and company policies and procedures. Working on high-speed rotating equipment and large machinery.
16.) Work 8-, 10- or 12-hour shift (dependent upon production requirements) in a primarily indoor manufacturing environment. Overtime and/or “weekend” work is required as needed. Work pace is subject to machine speed, machine issues, job deadlines, etc. Environment includes working with/around industrial chemicals including solvents for cleaning; printing inks; and food grade adhesives. Wear personal protective equipment as required.
17.) Ability to work from a standing position and maneuver around equipment and to consistently lift up to 50 lbs. and manipulate up to 75 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation. Also includes maneuvering up and down steps and portable stairs on multi-level machinery.
