Upon completion of a Cadet program, with additional testing, the program is designed to elevate Cadets into the role of Deputy Recruit.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and interpret documents such as statutes, regulations, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals written in English. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to verbally communicate effectively and persuasively with the public and present information accurately and concisely to other employees and supervisors of the agency.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License, or the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of appointment by the Sheriff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

- Age - Cadet applicants may complete the application process at the age of 17, but cannot be hired or begin working until he or she reaches the age of 18. Cadet applicants must be hired before reaching 20 years of age and be prepared to transition to a police academy, with approval of the Sheriff, between the ages of 20 ½ and 21 ½. Cadet employment will cease for those who do not progress to a police academy.
- Residency - Applicants do not need to be a Maryland resident to begin the process. However, they must become a Maryland resident on the date of hire as cadet.
- Must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. (Cadet Applicants may begin the application process in the final year of high school).
- Must possess a valid Maryland Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record. Their current driving record cannot exceed three points.
- Must be in excellent physical condition and pass a standard police academy physical agility test. Will participate in periodic standard academy physical agility tests and exercises throughout their employment as a cadet.
- Binocular visual acuity must be 20/20 with or without correction.
- Must have a good reputation and sound moral character.
- Must not have any current court orders against him or her relating to domestic violence nor any criminal misdemeanor or felony convictions.
- Must be truthful in every stage of the application process.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. The employee is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a variety of conditions and often outside. Employee regularly operates a motor vehicle and works in outside weather conditions. The employee often works with firearms. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electric shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, on occasion, is very loud when exposed to sirens, gun shots, air or gasoline operated equipment, and helicopter engine noise.

This position is one contained within the Queen Anne's County Civil Service System. Appointees to this position must serve a period of twenty-four (24) months’ probation (non certified) during which they may be terminated without notice or cause.
