Railcar Inspector & Estimator – AAR Billing

Company: Quality Rail Service
Job Type: Full-time

Job Overview

Quality Rail Service is seeking an experienced Railcar Inspector and Estimator to inspect freight cars, identify AAR defects, prepare accurate repair estimates, and coordinate the parts required to complete repairs.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on freight-car inspection experience, a strong understanding of AAR billing rules and job codes, and experience using rail-industry billing systems. Candidates must be comfortable managing the process from inbound inspection through customer approval and final billing documentation.

Responsibilities

· Conduct accurate inbound, outbound, and repair inspections on freight cars.

· Inspect cars according to customer scopes of work, AAR Field Manual requirements, and applicable FRA regulations.

· Identify and properly document AAR defects and required repairs.

· Create complete and accurate Billing Repair Cards (BRCs).

· Apply the correct AAR rules, job codes, qualifiers, Why Made Codes, labor hours, and material charges.

· Take clear before-and-after photographs of defects and completed repairs.

· Prepare repair estimates and submit them to customers for approval.

· Communicate with customers regarding estimate questions and repair approvals.

· Revise estimates when the repair scope, labor, or material requirements change.

· Prepare and submit final repair estimates and supporting documentation.

· Order railcar parts and materials needed to complete approved repairs.

· Verify part descriptions, quantities, availability, pricing, and delivery status.

· Work closely with production personnel to ensure the documented repair scope matches the work performed.

· Maintain accurate inspection, estimate, approval, photograph, and parts-ordering records.

· Learn and effectively use new customer billing or railcar-management systems as required.

Required Experience and Qualifications

· Previous freight-car inspection and repair-estimating experience.

· Strong working knowledge of AAR billing rules, job codes, and repair documentation.

· Experience creating BRCs and customer repair estimates.

· Familiarity with AAR Field Manual requirements and applicable FRA freight-car regulations.

· Experience using rail-industry billing, estimating, or car-repair management systems—or the demonstrated ability to quickly learn a new system.

· Experience identifying and ordering freight-car parts.

· Ability to recognize defects across multiple freight-car types and components.

· Strong computer, documentation, communication, and organizational skills.

· Ability to produce accurate work while managing multiple railcars, estimates, approvals, and parts orders.

· Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience with multiple customer billing platforms.

· Knowledge of Railinc systems and industry reporting requirements.

· Experience inspecting boxcars, covered hoppers, open-top hoppers, gondolas, flatcars, and other freight-car types.

· Previous hands-on freight-car repair experience.

· Familiarity with material pricing, standard labor hours, and customer-specific repair requirements.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to safely walk rail yards and shop areas in varying weather conditions.

· Ability to climb railcar ladders, bend, kneel, crouch, and inspect underneath and around freight cars.

· Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.

· Ability to safely work around railroad equipment, tools, and active repair operations.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position. Regular overtime and occasional late weekday or weekend work may be required based on production and customer needs.

Quality Rail Service is looking for a dependable, detail-oriented professional who understands that accurate inspections and estimates are critical to customer approval, production efficiency, compliance, and final billing. Final pay offer will be based on experience.

Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
