NOTE: This position requires hotel accounting experience in order to be considered.
We are seeking an experienced and analytical Assistant Controller / Finance Manager with strong hotel accounting experience, within a Marriott-managed or Marriott-branded property. This position serves as a key member of the property’s finance leadership team and plays a significant role in the administration, oversight, and integrity of the property’s accounting and financial operations.
The Assistant Controller / Finance Manager exercises substantial independent judgment and discretion in the evaluation, interpretation, and application of accounting principles, financial controls, operational procedures, and financial reporting matters. This role works closely with the Property Controller and leadership to support financial reporting, internal controls, audit compliance, cash management, budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and operational decision-making.
The position is classified as exempt under applicable California wage and hour laws and is intended to satisfy the administrative exemption based upon the nature of the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position, including the regular exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance relating to the property’s financial,accounting, budgeting, forecasting, internal control, and operational finance functions.
The Assistant Controller / Finance Manager is expected to customarily and regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment and perform work under only general supervision in carrying out assigned responsibilities.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced hospitality environment and possesses the ability to independently analyze financial data, identify operational and accounting issues, develop solutions, and make recommendations to management regarding accounting procedures and financial performance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Accounting Oversight
· Assist in overseeing the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the property in accordance with company policies, brand standards, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
· Support the Property Controller in managing the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting and accounting functions
· Analyze financial information, accounting activity, and operational trends to identify discrepancies, variances, risks, and opportunities for improvement
· Exercise independent judgment in researching and resolving accounting issues, reconciliation variances, and financial reporting matters
· Participate in the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules
· Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including review and approval of journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and account analyses
· Review financial statements, general ledger activity, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy and compliance with company accounting policies and procedures
Internal Controls, Compliance & Process Improvement
· Help administer and maintain internal accounting controls designed to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with company policies, audit requirements, and brand standards
· Evaluate accounting workflows and recommend process improvements to increase efficiency, strengthen controls, and improve reporting accuracy
· Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring accounting procedures and financial best practices
· Coordinate with auditors, ownership representatives, and management company personnel regarding financial reporting requests, audits, and compliance matters
· Ensure accounting records and supporting documentation are maintained in accordance with established standards and audit requirements
· Analyze accounting processes and operational procedures and recommend corrective action or procedural improvements where appropriate
Revenue, Cash Management & Financial Analysis
· Review and analyze revenue, cash activity, and balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting procedures
· Investigate and resolve discrepancies involving revenue reporting, cash transactions, credit card activity, and other financial variances· Analyze daily and monthly financial activity for multiple operating departments and revenue centers, including rooms, food & beverage, retail, spa, golf, and ancillary operations
· Assist with cash flow monitoring, account reconciliations, forecasting activities, and financial trend analysis
· Prepare and analyze financial reports, variance analyses, forecasts, and management summaries for property leadership and ownership
· Fully assist the Property Controller in all aspects of hotel accounting and financial operations
Leadership & Operational Support
· Supervise subordinate accounting and finance personnel, including assigning work, monitoring performance, reviewing work product, and ensuring compliance with company accounting procedures and internal controls
· Review and approve accounting work product prepared by subordinate employee(s), including reconciliations, journal entries, supporting schedules, and other financial documentation
· Provide guidance, training, and oversight to accounting staff regarding accounting procedures, reporting requirements, and operational finance matters
· Actively participate in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes, including preparation of financial projections, variance analyses, operational financial reviews, and management reporting
· Analyze financial and operational trends and make recommendations to management regarding financial performance, expense controls, operational efficiencies, and accounting procedures
· Collaborate with property and department managers to support operational decision-making and financial accountability
· Exercise independent judgment in identifying accounting, operational, and financial issues and recommending appropriate solutions
· Perform special financial projects, operational analyses, and management reporting assignments as directed by the Property Controller or ownership
Required Qualifications
· Significant hotel accounting experience with Marriott property management systems
· Strong knowledge of hospitality accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and revenue management processes
· Demonstrated ability to independently analyze financial information, interpret accounting data, and resolve complex accounting issues
· Experience preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial schedules in a multi-department hotel or environment
· Experience supervising or reviewing the work of accounting or finance personnel
· Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling, and analytical reporting
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
· Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential financial and operational matters
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience supporting a Property Controller, Director of Finance, or functioning in a senior-level hotel accounting or finance management role
· Familiarity with hotel PMS, POS, and accounting systems commonly used in branded hospitality environments
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred
· CPA or advanced accounting certification is a plus
Pay: $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
