Job Title: Phlebotomist III
Job Description
The Phlebotomist III plays a key role in providing high-quality specimen collection and support within a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. This position not only performs blood draws and other specimen collections, but also assists with troubleshooting, training team members, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant operations.
Responsibilities

Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.

Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocol.

Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.

Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% accurate against the script.

Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.

Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes following protocol for transport.

Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.

Update patient information accurately in the system to ensure proper tracking and reporting of test results.

Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen quality and compliance.

Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen handling.

Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to callers as appropriate to satisfy inquiries, following applicable guidelines.

Attend annual department trainings and remain current with laboratory procedures, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.

Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and environmental protocols.

Contribute to troubleshooting specimen collection or workflow issues and make recommendations to improve processes.

Support training of other staff in phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling, and workflow best practices as needed.
Essential Skills
-
Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required.

Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

At least 2 years of inpatient phlebotomy experience.

Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws and venipunctures using straight and butterfly needles.

Strong experience in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.

Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders and labels.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, reporting, and communication tasks.

High School Diploma or GED.

Thorough understanding of physicians’ laboratory orders and related specimen requirements.

Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety procedures.

Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate specimen handling, labeling, and data entry.

Effective communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and respond to inquiries.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) license.

2-4 years of overall experience in phlebotomy or related clinical laboratory roles.

Experience working in a fast-paced inpatient hospital environment.

Ability to assist with training and mentoring other phlebotomy staff.

Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results in a clear and professional manner.

Ability to participate in ongoing departmental training and adapt to updated procedures and protocols.

Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
Work Environment
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that requires strict adherence to safety, regulatory, and specimen-handling protocols. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen containers, and temperature-controlled storage units. The environment involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, as well as regular use of computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. Annual department trainings are part of the culture, supporting continuous learning and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. Professional, clean, and appropriate clinical attire is expected to maintain a safe and respectful patient care environment.

This is a Contract position based out of Imperial, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $28.00/hr.
