Through the Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program, we help income-qualified households reduce energy costs while improving the safety and comfort of their homes. SCKEDD is seeking an Energy Auditor/Housing Inspector I to join our Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program. This full-time position provides an opportunity to improve the safety, comfort, and energy efficiency of homes throughout southern Kansas while making a meaningful impact in local communities.
Inspectors work four 10-hour days (Monday through Thursday) with a 30-minute lunch break, providing a three-day weekend most weeks. Flexibility in scheduling may occasionally be required. SCKEDD serves a 40-county region across southern Kansas, and periodic overnight travel may be necessary. Agency vehicles, tools, and equipment are provided.
SCKEDD invests in employee development through paid training, nationally recognized certifications, and opportunities for advancement within the Weatherization Program. We are looking for dependable, motivated individuals who enjoy hands-on work and making a difference in their communities. Starting pay begins at $20.95 per hour, with compensation based on qualifications and relevant experience. All new employees are subject to a 90-day introductory employment period. Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive energy audits and housing inspections in accordance with Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program guidelines.
- Inspect and test combustion appliances to determine repairs, replacement or adjustments that may be needed.
- Conduct blower door testing, combustion appliance safety testing, and other diagnostic evaluations.
- Identify cost-effective energy conservation measures and prepare detailed work orders.
- Inspect completed work to verify quality, compliance, and program standards.
- Accurately document inspections, testing results, photographs, and client information using computerized systems.
- Maintain agency equipment and vehicles in a safe and professional manner.
- Provide excellent customer service while educating homeowners about energy efficiency and home safety.
- Follow all agency safety policies and applicable state and federal regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in residential construction, weatherization, home inspection, energy auditing, HVAC, carpentry, or a related field.
- Experience performing housing inspections or property assessments.
- Building Performance Institute (BPI), Home Energy Professional (HEP), or similar industry certifications.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment such as blower doors, combustion analyzers, moisture meters, or infrared cameras.
- Experience working with federally funded housing or energy assistance programs.
- No previous weatherization experience is required. Paid training and certification opportunities are provided for qualified candidates.
Minimum Qualifications
- Driving Requirement: This position requires regular travel throughout the SCKEDD service area to client homes and communities. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license, maintain an insurable driving record, and be eligible to operate agency vehicles in accordance with the agency's automobile insurance requirements. Employment is contingent upon meeting these driving and insurance eligibility standards, and applicants who are not eligible to be insured under the agency's policy may not qualify for this position.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Ability to travel throughout SCKEDD's 40-county service area, including occasional overnight travel.
- Ability to work four 10-hour days (Monday through Thursday) with flexibility in scheduling as needed.
- Basic knowledge of residential construction, home maintenance, or building systems.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, measurements, and technical information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients, contractors, and coworkers.
- Basic computer skills, including experience using tablets, laptops, Microsoft Office, and electronic data entry.
- Ability to work independently while effectively managing time and daily schedules.
- Ability to successfully complete required Weatherization Assistance Program training and obtain any required certifications.
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently climb ladders.
- Work safely in attics, crawlspaces, and other confined spaces.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
