Overview

We are an agency committed to innovative behavioral health services in trauma-informed care that promote healing and recovery to instill a sense of empowerment and foster a lifelong sense of resilience.

General Description

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) performs duties under direction of a clinical supervisor (RN/LVN/Physician/APRN/PA) to assist in examination and treatment of individuals served at the clinical site. The CMA makes interpretations and exercises some discretion in routine situations. The CMA provides direct care with utmost customer service, compassion, and integrity to individuals in a clinic setting.

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

Provides direct care to patients within discipline Scope of Practice and performs functions in accordance with current accepted practice, licensure, certification, credentialing and or granted privileges.
Responsible for behavioral, primary care and substance use disorders program and clinic functions including placing individual patients in rooms, obtaining, and measuring vital signs, as well as taking the medical history and reason for seeking care. The CMA documents the information in the medical record or the electronic record.
Informs the onsite nurse and/or nursing supervisor of any vital signs outside of parameters, or medication or medical history concerns.
Prepares and maintains examination/treatment rooms, including cleaning and sanitizing instruments, and inventory of medical supplies and materials.
Calls individuals to ask questions and follow-up on medication calls and documents the calls in the electronic health record.
Acts as a designated agent for calling in or faxing medication prescriptions to the pharmacy the CMA can also enter an electronic prescription and send to the provider under supervision of physician.
Works to assist with medication inventory at the site. This includes injections, medications delivered from the pharmacy, samples, and medications for destruction. The CMA acts as a designated staff to check medication delivered by a pharmacy for correct packaging and labeling and notifying LVN/RN on site if there is an error. Document delivery, and place in designated storage.
Informs the nurse and/or administrative nursing supervisor of any discrepancies in inventory as delegated by physician.
Checks medication for expiration dates in the emergency box and informs the nurse of any if medications are expired or the seal has been broken as delegated by physician.
Explains treatment procedures to patients such as labs. EKGs and all others that are appropriate as delegated by physician.
Performs routine diagnostic and laboratory tests which may include being required to draw blood and collect samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis as well as performs EKGs.
Prepares, administers, and records injections according to medical orders and agency guidelines under the supervision and/or delegation of the physician.
Informs prescriber of abnormal lab/test results and communicates follow-up information to the patient, such as mailing out lab reports, etc.
Assist with clinical duties, such as patient medication calls, etc.
Perform other job duties or responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires a High School Diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years of experience in a mental health clinical care setting; or possession of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of trauma-informed theories, principals, and practices (includes multi-faceted understanding of concepts such as community trauma, intergenerational and historical trauma, parallel processes, and universal precautions), preferred.

Physical Demands

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
- Electrical shock; Heights.
- Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
- Toxic/caustic chemicals; Explosives; Violence.
- Other extreme hazards not listed above.

Special Certifications and Licenses

Requires a Texas Certified Medical Assistant Certificate by the Board of Nurse Examiners.
Must possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
Must be able to pass a TB, criminal background, and drug screen.
