Recycling Area Supervisor

The Recycling Area Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the site's recycling and waste segregation area. This position ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and cost-effective handling of non-production waste generated by manufacturing, warehouse, and facility operations.
The Supervisor has primary responsibility for leading and developing the recycling and segregation team, establishing daily work assignments, enforcing material segregation standards, monitoring productivity and quality, and maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
The Recycling Area Supervisor also serves as the primary site contact for the contracted waste and recycling service provider. This includes coordinating pickups, monitoring container capacity, verifying weights and documentation, resolving service issues, and ensuring recyclable materials are removed in a timely manner so that production and warehouse operations are not disrupted.
Key Responsibilities:
. Team Leadership & People Management
- Plan and assign daily and weekly work activities for the recycling and segregation crew.
- Supervise employees and temporary agency personnel performing sorting, flattening, baling, bagging, pallet stacking, and material handling activities.
- Adjust staffing assignments based on daily material volume, production requirements, and pickup schedules.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, breaks, overtime, and shift coverage.
- Coordinate replacement personnel and additional temporary labor during periods of increased volume.
- Train new employees on recycling procedures, material identification, equipment operation, PPE requirements, and applicable safety practices.
- Maintain training records and provide refresher training when performance or safety issues are identified.
- Establish clear performance expectations and hold employees accountable for productivity, quality, attendance, housekeeping, and safe work practices.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and performance documentation in accordance with company policies.
- Escalate disciplinary and employee relations matters to the Warehouse Manager and HR as appropriate.
- Cross-train employees across recycling stations and maintain a skills matrix to ensure adequate coverage.
- Promote teamwork, employee engagement, retention, and a positive work environment.
Recycling & Material Segregation Operations
- Oversee the segregation and handling of recyclable materials, including:
- Corrugated cardboard and empty boxes
- Plastic trays
- Plastic bags and stretch film
- Wooden pallets
- Other approved non-hazardous recyclable materials
- Ensure materials are properly sorted and separated to prevent contamination.
- Ensure recyclable materials are removed from production and warehouse areas before accumulation creates operational or safety concerns.
- Maintain properly labeled collection points, bins, gaylords, staging areas, and recycling containers.
- Establish and enforce material segregation standards for each waste stream.
- Ensure recyclable materials are free of prohibited materials, liquids, food waste, hazardous materials, and other contaminants.
- Inspect and grade wooden pallets as reusable, repairable, or scrap.
- Coordinate reusable pallets for internal circulation or vendor return and ensure damaged pallets are appropriately staged for repair or recycling.
- Operate and oversee recycling equipment, including balers, compactors, pallet jacks, and forklifts when properly trained and certified.
- Conduct or verify required pre-use equipment inspections.
- Report equipment defects and coordinate maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain 5S standards throughout the recycling area, including clean floors, organized staging locations, clear aisles, defined storage footprints, and unobstructed fire lanes.
- Ensure end-of-shift cleanup and housekeeping requirements are completed.
- Waste & Recycling Vendor Coordination
· Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for the contracted waste and recycling provider.
· Schedule routine and emergency pickups based on material volume and container capacity.
· Monitor container and staging-area fill levels to prevent overflow.
· Coordinate container swaps and communicate changes in pickup requirements.
· Escalate missed, delayed, or incomplete pickups to the Warehouse Manager and vendor.
· Receive waste and recycling collection vehicles and ensure drivers follow site access, safety, and traffic requirements.
· Verify that the correct material is loaded into the appropriate container.
· Review and maintain weight tickets, bills of lading, manifests, certificates of recycling/destruction, and other applicable documentation.
· Reconcile collection documentation against vendor invoices and identify discrepancies.
· Track recurring vendor service issues and provide feedback regarding vendor performance.
· Support vendor evaluations, service-level reviews, contract renewals, and cost-reduction initiatives.
Safety, Environmental Compliance & EHS Support
· Ensure recycling operations are conducted in accordance with company EHS policies and applicable environmental, waste management, and workplace safety requirements.
· Enforce proper use of required PPE, including safety shoes, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and high-visibility vests.
· Conduct shift-start safety meetings and job-specific safety talks.
· Immediately correct unsafe behaviors and conditions.
· Report and support investigation of accidents, injuries, near misses, spills, and other incidents.
· Support corrective and preventive actions resulting from incidents, inspections, and audits.
· Ensure employees understand and follow applicable equipment safety and lockout/tagout requirements.
· Maintain safe material stacking and storage practices.
· Keep fire lanes, emergency access routes, aisles, exits, and equipment access points clear.
· Support ISO 14001, internal, customer, and regulatory audits by maintaining documentation and ensuring the recycling area is audit-ready.
· Immediately escalate unidentified, hazardous, or potentially regulated materials to EHS.
Records, Reporting & Performance Management
- Maintain accurate records of recycling volumes and weights by material stream.
- Track pickup dates, container swaps, vendor service activity, and material disposition.
- Maintain equipment inspection and maintenance records.
- Maintain employee training and certification records.
- Track attendance, staffing levels, labor hours, overtime, and temporary labor utilization.
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports covering:
- Recycling volumes
- Material diversion from landfill
- Labor hours and staffing
- Pickup activity
- Contamination or quality issues
- Safety incidents and corrective actions
- Vendor performance
- Open operational issues
- Monitor recycling-area KPIs and identify opportunities to improve productivity, material recovery, and operating cost.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to reduce labor hours per ton of material processed.
- Improve container placement and collection-point design.
- Increase pallet reuse and reduce unnecessary disposal.
- Reduce contamination between recyclable material streams.
- Improve recycling-area organization and material flow.
- Identify opportunities to reduce landfill disposal and overall waste-management costs.
- Participate in 5S, Lean, and continuous improvement activities.
- Implement practical improvements that improve safety, productivity, quality, and environmental performance.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum 2–3 years of supervisory or team-lead experience in warehouse, manufacturing, logistics, recycling, waste management, or a related environment.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead approximately 5–15 employees, including temporary agency personnel.
- Experience assigning work, monitoring productivity, coaching employees, and addressing performance issues.
- Working knowledge of warehouse safety, PPE requirements, and material-handling practices.
- Ability to accurately complete shipping, weight, pickup, and other operational documentation.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, spreadsheets, and data-entry systems.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a bilingual workforce.
- English required; Spanish strongly preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in recycling, waste management, environmental services, or materials recovery.
- Forklift and/or pallet jack certification or willingness to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
- Experience with 5S, Lean Manufacturing, or continuous improvement.
- Experience managing external waste or recycling vendors.
- Experience working in electronics, server, high-volume manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics operations.
- Experience using WMS, ERP, or inventory-management systems
Performance Measures / KPIs
The Recycling Area Supervisor will be evaluated based on measurable performance, including:
- Recycling/diversion volume by material stream.
- Material contamination rate.
- Recycling area housekeeping and 5S performance.
- Container overflow and production-impact incidents.
- On-time waste and recycling pickups.
- Labor hours and overtime utilization.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to travel between office, warehouse, and manufacturing areas as needed.
- May occasionally work outside normal business hours during system upgrades, maintenance windows, or production support activities.
Work Environment:
· Climate-controlled warehouse and assembly areas
· Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and operating forklifts or pallet jacks
