Full Job Description

Position Summary

The College Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive college and career readiness program for students. The College Advisor provides individualized guidance to students and families throughout the post-secondary planning process, including college exploration, applications, financial aid, scholarships, standardized testing, and transition planning.

The College Advisor works closely with teachers, school leadership, families, colleges, universities, and community organizations to ensure that students are prepared to successfully pursue post-secondary education, career training, military service, or other career pathways.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCollege & Career Advising

MUST BE BILINGUAL SPANISH
Provide individualized college and career counseling to students.
Help students identify colleges, universities, career programs, and other post-secondary opportunities aligned with their interests, abilities, and goals.
Develop individualized post-secondary plans for students.
Assist students in understanding admission requirements, application deadlines, and enrollment processes.
Guide students in developing balanced college lists based on academic profile, interests, financial considerations, and career goals.
Educate students about majors, degree programs, career pathways, and employment opportunities.

College Application Support

Manage and monitor the college application process for assigned students.
Assist students with applications, essays, personal statements, resumes, and supplemental materials.
Coordinate the submission of transcripts, recommendation letters, school reports, and other required documents.
Track application deadlines and maintain accurate records of application status.
Support students with applications through platforms such as Common Application and individual college application systems.
Help students evaluate college acceptance and financial aid offers.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Educate students and families about FAFSA, financial aid, grants, scholarships, work-study, and other funding opportunities.
Assist families in understanding the college financial aid process.
Identify and communicate scholarship opportunities to eligible students.
Organize financial aid and scholarship workshops for students and families.
Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid resources.

Student & Family Engagement

Conduct individual and group advising sessions.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding students' college and career plans.
Conduct college planning workshops, information sessions, and family meetings.
Help families understand college costs, financial aid, admissions requirements, and enrollment procedures.
Promote parent and family engagement throughout the college planning process.

College & Community Partnerships

Develop and maintain relationships with colleges, universities, career programs, scholarship organizations, and community partners.
Coordinate college representative visits, college fairs, campus visits, and informational sessions.
Establish partnerships that provide students with internships, mentorships, enrichment programs, and post-secondary opportunities.
Serve as the school's primary point of contact for college admissions representatives when appropriate.

Data Management & Reporting

Maintain accurate and confidential student college and career records.
Track student applications, acceptances, enrollment, scholarships, and financial aid.
Maintain a college application and admissions database.
Prepare reports for school leadership regarding college application and post-secondary outcomes.
Monitor college-going and post-secondary enrollment rates.
Use data to identify areas for improvement in the school's college and career readiness program.

School-Based Programming

Develop and implement a comprehensive college and career readiness calendar.
Provide programming related to college awareness, career exploration, standardized testing, financial literacy, and post-secondary planning.
Collaborate with teachers and administrators to integrate college and career readiness into the academic program.
Support students with SAT/ACT preparation and other college entrance requirements as applicable.
Coordinate college and career readiness events throughout the school year.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in School Counseling, Higher Education, Education, College Counseling, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in college advising, school counseling, college admissions, higher education, or a related field.
Knowledge of college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and post-secondary pathways.
Strong understanding of the college application process and deadlines.
Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
Strong technology and data-management skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive student information professionally.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a public, charter, or independent school setting.
Knowledge of New York State and New York City college access and financial aid resources.
Experience developing college access programming and family workshops.
