Extra Mile Partners
Extra Mile Partners is an embedded strategic agency supporting a large, multi-location automotive retail organization.
We are seeking a hands-on Director of Automotive Data & AI to lead the development of the organization’s data, business intelligence, automation, and AI capabilities.
This role will work directly with executive leadership and teams across sales, service, marketing, inventory, finance, accounting, and technology. The objective is to create an organization-owned intelligence capability that improves decision-making, operating performance, and execution across the dealership group.
What You’ll Own
- Data strategy and infrastructure: Audit the organization’s DMS, CRM, inventory, pricing, website, phone, marketing, F&I, service, accounting, and related systems. Build a centralized cloud data environment with reliable pipelines, standardized records, strong data quality, appropriate security, and clear ownership of operational information.
- Business intelligence and reporting: Partner with leadership to define the metrics, operating signals, and questions that matter most. Build dashboards, executive briefings, alerts, and decision-support tools that identify performance changes, explain likely causes, and recommend action.
- Operational improvement: Map and improve high-value workflows across sales, service, inventory, marketing, and dealership operations. Identify manual work, inconsistent handoffs, duplicate processes, and lost revenue opportunities, then determine where standardization, automation, or AI can improve speed, accuracy, and accountability.
- AI tools and digital agents: Identify and prioritize AI opportunities based on business value, technical feasibility, and organizational readiness. Build or oversee assistants, automations, and agents supporting areas such as lead follow-up, service scheduling, declined-service recovery, inventory aging, pricing alerts, customer trade cycles, and management reporting.
- Technical execution and governance: Connect tools to existing systems through APIs and approved integrations while establishing safeguards for data access, customer communications, financial decisions, pricing recommendations, and system write-backs. Monitor accuracy, adoption, exceptions, and measurable business outcomes after deployment.
- Leadership and adoption: Serve as the primary data and AI advisor to automotive leadership. Translate business needs into clear technical priorities, manage internal and external development resources, and ensure new tools reduce work, improve decisions, and fit within actual dealership operations.
First 90 Days
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Complete an audit of major systems, data sources, integrations, data-access rights, and data-quality issues.
- Recommend the architecture, priorities, and implementation roadmap for a centralized data environment.
- Establish common definitions for core dealership records and performance metrics while mapping several high-value operational workflows.
- Identify the most important recurring signals for leadership and launch an initial AI or automation pilot with a measurable business outcome.
The development sequence is intentional: clean data first, documented workflows second, intelligence tools third, digital agents fourth.
Experience and Qualifications
- Five or more years of relevant experience in data engineering, analytics, business intelligence, software development, AI product development, or technical consulting preferred.
- Demonstrated experience building or managing cloud data warehouses, lakehouses, data pipelines, or business-intelligence environments.
- Strong knowledge of SQL, relational data structures, APIs, integrations, identity resolution, data quality, and governance.
- Practical experience with large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, workflow automation, model evaluation, and AI-enabled applications.
- Ability to develop prototypes directly while managing developers, vendors, consultants, and technology partners for larger production deployments.
- Automotive retail, dealership technology, DMS, CRM, inventory, pricing, or service-operations experience is strongly preferred.
What We’re Looking For
The right candidate will combine strong technical capability with practical business judgment. They must be able to translate ambiguous operating problems into clear requirements, communicate effectively with executives and frontline employees, manage cross-functional initiatives, challenge assumptions, and prioritize measurable value over technical novelty.
Measures of Success
Success will be measured by the ability to:
- Establish a reliable, secure, and organization-owned data foundation.
- Provide leadership with accurate, timely, and actionable operational intelligence.
- Reduce manual reporting, disconnected processes, and preventable operational gaps.
- Deploy AI and automation tools that employees consistently use and that produce measurable gains in revenue, gross profit, customer retention, productivity, or operating efficiency.
