Job Summary
Performs a variety of duties in the Center, as a member of the surgical team. Scrubs on all types of cases performed at the Center, including orthopedic, pain and local cases. Assists in preparation for cases by "picking instruments" and set-up and maintenance of sterile field. May also function as surgeon's second assistant. Assist OR team in all aspects of room turnover. Pick soft goods and instrumentation to facilitate preparation for following days' surgery.

1. Environmental Demands: Indoor area with frequent exposure to mild discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature and noise. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials.
2. Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands, Manual Dexterity: Requires prolonged periods of standing in place at sterile field. Requires ability to perform lifting and transport of patients. Lift/handle/carry materials, trays or equipment of moderate weight (20 to 50 lbs).

C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
Montefiore Nyack Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) specific job competencies:
1. Prepares for next days scheduled procedures by cases, using surgeon’s preference cards to assure that all necessary supplies, soft goods, instruments and equipment are available. Labels case order and prepares a needs list accurately in collaboration with Central Sterile team.
2. Actively assists without direction in surgery suite maintenance including case preparation, turn-over, and terminal cleaning. Follows AORN Recommended Practices and Center policy.
3. Assists team and with inventory control, informing & updating materials team of low par-levels
4. Performs daily stocking and re-stocking of OR and clean-supply stock room.
Ambulatory Scrub Tech Clinical job competencies:
1. Demonstrates appropriate sterile and aseptic techniques, at all times in the surgery suite.
2. Demonstrates appropriate dress, according to policy, at all times in the surgery suite.
3. Performs scrub technician and surgery assistant function according to AORN Recommended Practices and Center policies:
A. Performs appropriate hand scrub at beginning of day and for each case thereafter.
B. Dons sterile dress appropriately, using closed glove technique.
C. Demonstrates set-up and maintenance of the sterile field for all assigned cases.
D. Demonstrates instrument set-up, arranging instrumentation, equipment and supplies on the mayo and back table(s) as appropriate for the assigned case and according to AORN Recommended Practices, Center policy and the surgeon’s preference card.
E. Anticipates the intra-operative needs of the surgeon and other members of the surgical team, such as instrumentation, sponges, sutures, suction and cautery.
F. Assists surgeon in holding retractors after placement by the physician, whenever possible.
G. Passes instruments to members of the surgical team in a safe manner and in such a way as to not divert attention away from the operative field, whenever possible.
H. Handles sharps appropriately and performs required and as-needed sharps counts, per policy, so as to safeguard the patient, self and other members of the surgical team.
I. Manages the operative field, including drapes, equipment, instrumentation, and personnel during the procedure and in a manner which assures maintenance of the sterile field.
J. Assists in observing the patient, during the operative procedure, for complications such as hemorrhage and furnishes equipment and supplies to provide for optimum patient outcome.
K. Handles specimens appropriately, per Center policy.
L. Assists in application of sterile dressing prior to removal of drapes from field.
M. Prepares clean and contaminated instruments and supplies utilized in the surgery suite for transport, in an appropriate manner, and transports to decontamination for processing and re-sterilization. If necessary, applies enzymatic cleaner in the OR before transport to decontaminate.
4. Demonstrates care of delicate instrumentation by proper handling and storage of instruments used on assigned cases.
5. Assists in disinfecting, cleaning and preparation for sterilization, any instruments, equipment, and supplies utilized at Center.
6. Adheres to all infection control policies including OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions for exposure to blood and body fluids, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and sharps handling.
7. Assists in orientation of new personnel, students, and approved program participants by explaining and demonstrating techniques and methods used in Center units and answering questions appropriately.
8. Participates in the Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of aspects of care, collection and analysis of data, formulation of recommendations, and implementation of an improvement plan and evaluation of the process.
9. Maintains all required certifications. Performs effectively in an emergency situation.
10. Maintains strict patient and professional confidentiality.

Qualifications
- High School Required or
- GED Required
- 1-2 years of ambulatory operating room experience. Preferred
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and to organize work in order of importance.
- Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Upon Hire Required
- BLS - American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
