Organization Description - Ohio-West Virginia Youth Leadership Association (YLA) works to renew community life, build an entrepreneurial culture, strengthen stewardship of our cultural and natural heritage, prepare new generations of civic leaders and more responsible citizens for our communities, states, nation, and world.
The program roots of this YLA extend back to 1867 beginning as a State YMCA. Today, YLA is an Association open to all.
YLA’s experiential learning, leadership, character, service, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy model guides all we do. YLA engages people in identifying the kind of community they want, planning, and carrying out programs, projects, and volunteer initiatives to achieve their vision and evaluate their efforts to strengthen future actions.
Essential Position Responsibilities - Under the general guidance of the Executive, the YLA School Year Program Director works with youth, volunteers, and a team of YLA Field Staff to advance the quality of, participation in, support for, and impact of local YLAs, YLA Ohio and West Virginia Youth in Government, YLA Model United Nations, YLA 8th Grade Youth & Government Seminars, YLA Leadership camps and conferences as well as support Camp Horseshoe and Cave Lake staff all in a common effort to
- Create, prepare, and conduct quality purpose based YLA programs,
- Engage youth, volunteers, alumni, donors, partners, and YLA staff field staff to achieve our mission, program effectiveness, participation and support reach capacity,
- Gain and maintain the support of school, community, civic, and other groups,
- Identify, recruit, train, and develop adult volunteer leadership,
- Keep program methods, presentations, materials current; develop new approaches, programs, and outreach,
- Build public awareness of YLA,
- Maintain regular contact with advisors, local community leaders and others,
- Maintain safety for self, staff, and participants,

Other Position Duties
This position may include work in other areas of YLA, involvement in professional associations, or perhaps work related to the broader vision of YLA and camping. Reading, writing using correct English grammar, speaking to others and groups are required.
Equipment Used
Proficiency in computer skills and related word processing, data management, Internet, computer software, hard copy records, filing, and record keeping.
Physical Requirement
This position requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, write, and physical ability to move about offices and the various buildings and settings of YLA programs including climbing steps. The position requires sitting, standing, walking, extensive travel, lifting and carrying 50 pounds, helping load and unload materials for programs and meetings then upload same after a program or meeting.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Skills necessary to create, maintain, and extend YLA programs throughout the two-state area to capacity in participation, impact, support, and program revenue.
- Skilled working with and motivating youth, volunteers, and staff to achieve goals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with people of all walks of life, staff, media, schools, government, donors, alumni, organizations
- Management skills in areas of program, staff, finance, resource, time, record keeping, meeting deadlines.
- Is organized, can organize others, tasks, materials, can manage time and resources effectively, meets deadlines, self-motivated and directed.
- Willing and able to learn, to learn from others, and to teach.
- Able to work with a small staff and a diverse range of volunteers in a program that accomplishes much with too few resources and in a position that requires extensive travel across two states.

9. Able to pass a criminal background check.
Effect on End Results - YLA School Year Program Director has the primary impact on the effectiveness of the Ohio-West Virginia Youth Leadership Association in achieving its Purpose and Mission through local YLAs, Youth in Government, 8th Grade YGS Seminars, Fall Conference, Model United Nations, Horseshoe, Cave Lake and other YLA initiatives and programs. Success will result in –
1. Quality program experience enables participants to credit their YLA experience helping them grow as healthy and productive people who work building better homes, schools, and communities.
2. Good community understanding of the Purpose and work of YLA.
3. Youth participation reaches capacity in every program including numbers of Chapters, adequate support is secured, and an ever-expanding base of civic leadership is benefiting our communities, states and nation as more people have a YLA experience.
4. An expanded, motivated, and action-oriented group of volunteers, alumni, assisting with program, participation, and support.
5. Community groups, organizations, government - education - community
development at all levels turn to YLA as a key component of their work.
Pay: $40,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
