The Role:

The Academic Advisor's primary role is to deliver individual academic advisement to students who have decided or have an intended major in the College of the Sciences.

The CWU College of the Sciences (COTS) consists of academic departments and programs in American Indian Studies, Anthropology and Museum Studies, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Craft Brewing, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geological Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies: Social Science, Law & Justice, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, Primate Behavior and Ecology, Psychology, Science and Mathematics Education, Sociology, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. In collaboration with the COTS Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chairs, and the Director of COTS Advising, the team of Academic Advisors will provide the academic advising of all COTS undergraduate students.

This position provides undergraduate advising about CWU's general education curriculum, university requirements, as well as assigned major(s) within the College. The position assists with College and university initiated proactive advising campaigns and lends additional support to students in academic difficulty or on academic warning/probation. Academic Advisors directly affect the vision, mission, and values of Central Washington University by creating and promoting a welcoming environment where students, faculty, and staff feel supported and by promoting access and opportunity for all students. All employees are expected to uphold and contribute to CWU's vision, mission, and values, fostering a culture of student success and institutional excellence.

Job Duties

Academic Advising
- Proactively manage a dynamic caseload of undergraduate students by assigned majors within the College of the Sciences, conducting academic advising, providing timely interventions, and making appropriate referrals, as necessary.
- Maintain a consistent pattern of contact to encourage a trusting relationship through multiple channels of communication.
- Advise students about general education, pre-major, or major and graduation requirements.
- Advise prospective and incoming transfer students or refer them to the Transfer Center or departments as appropriate.
- Guide students in developing a plan of study that meets degree requirements. Assist students with understanding course articulation and recommending appropriate academic course loads and course selections.
- Help students make informed academic decisions by teaching them how to track their own academic progress, locate and interpret appropriate policies, and to utilize the tools and resources available to them.
- Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results, as well as university policy and procedures.

Liaison/Outreach
- Develop strong working relationships with academic departments, programs, faculty, and staff across campus.
- Design and deliver presentations to various audiences.
- Collaborate with the other advisors, advising staff from other colleges, and other university units, as appropriate.
- Support new student orientation and new student program activities where academic advising is concerned, providing information and support to new students and their families.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of relevant experience and/or a Bachelor's degree in any field.
Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft 365 Copilot suite and/or similar software applications to produce professional written correspondence, create and maintain spreadsheets, and receive and respond to email inquiries, tasks, etc.
Demonstrated ability to work independently to accomplish tasks and projects.
Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree.
Experience with implementation of solutions to facilitate student success, retention, and graduation.
Additional experience and/or education relevant to academic advising, admissions, counseling, teaching, or student services in higher education.
Life experiences that demonstrate an ability to contribute to CWU's vision, mission, and values.
Experience or interest in mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: The Hiring Department's expected hiring range is $49,000 - $54,000 annually. Individual placement within the hiring range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the full annual salary range for this position is $46,209 to $64,692.

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch)

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person and online interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. The position requires a certain amount of mobility in order to retrieve files, attend meetings, respond to clients in person, on the phone, and via email. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
