Full Job Description

Bailiff

Position Overview

Responsible for maintaining security, safety and decorum in an assigned court and associated public facilities while the court is in session and during public access hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Monitors scanning equipment, general public and prisoners at the bailiff station, security gate or in court to ensure safety as directed by the Court.
Maintains procedures to protect the safety of the Judge and the Court's property; protects all Court personnel, Attorneys, and visitors in the Courts; maintains control and security of the jury during all phases of the trial.
Calls Court to order and maintains appropriate decorum in Court whenever Court is in session.
Ensure potential witnesses are separated from jurors prior to and throughout trial.
Takes emergency action and/or notifies emergency personnel as the situation warrants; may administer basic first aid or CPR if required.
Acts as liaison between the Judge, Attorneys, Courtroom staff and the public in order to ensure orderly conduct of Court business.
Opens and locks secure areas and facilities; sets up courtroom for operation.
May perform general office support work, deliver or pick up documents and other materials and assist the Judge in other ways as instructed.
Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Responsible for internal/external perimeter security walks prior to, during and end of each shift
Techniques for dealing with the public, in person and over the telephone in a professional and respectful manner.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School diploma/GED; AND two (2) years of experience in law enforcement or public safety; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

Nevada Class C Driver’s License.
Nevada Category I POST Certification (must remain in good standing).
CPR, AED, & First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

Knowledge of

Principles and techniques of public relations and customer service.
Safety and security policies and procedures.
First aid and basic CPR methods.
Applying and explaining federal, state and local laws related to the service and enforcement of civil processes.
Personal computers and utilizing standard and specialized software applications.
Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.

Analyzing situations quickly and objectively.
Determining proper course of action under emergency conditions.
Coping with adverse situations firmly, courteously and with respect for individual rights.
Use of non-lethal tools.
Carrying out oral and written instructions.
Using initiative and independent judgment within established policy guidelines.
Prepare clear, concise and accurate reports.
Establish effective working relationships with departmental personnel, public law enforcement agencies, community groups and general public, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.

Ability to

Read and interpret safety rules, policies, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including interacting with the public and court personnel.
Apply common sense and sound judgment in carrying out written and oral instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Judges, attorneys, litigants, law enforcement agencies, witnesses, and co-workers.
Maintain professionalism and composure in potentially stressful or confrontational situations.
Work independently in routine situations with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality
