Full Job Description

Overview:

Under the direction of the Pension Department Manager, the Pension Claims Adjuster will perform specialized duties which require attention to detail and a thorough understanding of applicable rules and procedures. The job duties will include but are not limited to: customer service, data reconciliation, generating and interpreting reports, processing and auditing applications for benefits, ensuring quality service delivery to plan participants, and assist in ensuring merger plan and/or trust plan rules are properly applied. Communication with participants, staff and certain service providers is required. The position will also assist with training new staff on Plan rules, procedures, benefit calculations. The Pension Claims Adjuster is a full-time position, with a core work schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Schedule may change depending on departmental needs.

Position Functions and Responsibilities:

Determine benefit eligibility and process retirement and death benefit applications.
Determine benefit suspensions are in accordance with applicable Plan provisions and initiate correspondence with retirees.
Calculate pension benefits, including optional forms of benefits, and all other benefit calculations as specified in Plan documents, merger documents.
Confer with Plan’s legal counsel and consulting actuary to ensure proper benefit calculations resulting from divorce or QDROs, and other manually calculated benefits.
Guide junior staff on proper claims processing to ensure Plan rules and procedures are correctly followed.
Perform peer to peer review of retirement and death benefit applications.
Calculate and determine Alternate Payee and Participant portion of benefits to ensure all stipulated terms of the QDRO are applied.
Audit complex retirement and death benefits, to ensure the proper application of Plan provisions and rules.
Respond to participant communication and correspondence.
Assist with other duties or special projects as assigned by the Pension Manager.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of five (5) years increasingly responsible experience in pension plan administration.
Experience with merged defined benefit or defined contribution plans preferred.
Extensive knowledge of pension benefits and experience in examining operations and procedures.
Significant knowledge of governmental/legislative regulations (ERISA, DOL, PPA).
Experience in benefits administration systems.
Advanced professional designation(s) related to the qualified plan industry preferred.
CEBS Benefits Certification (preferred but not required).
Proficient with all MS Office Suite products and ability to understand relational databases.
Proficiency in Spanish a plus (read, write, speak, translate).
Detailed research, documentation, analytical and reporting skills.
Ability to complete assigned projects with a high degree of independence, initiative, and judgement.
Dedicated team player with an interest in processing efficiency and effectiveness.
Self-motivated and driven with ability to work independently within a collaborative work environment.
Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of Management, visitors, Trustees, consultants, CSAC professionals and vendors.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities but does include coaching and mentoring junior staff.

Work Environment/ Physical Demands

While performing the duties of the job, the employee regularly works in an office setting.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear. Ability to lift 10-30 pounds when necessary.

Travel

Minimal to no travel. Occasional travel to business related events, offices and/or seminars may be required.
