Director of Finance

Part-Time, 6-Month Contract

Company: Veritas

Location: Carlsbad, CA (hybrid; regular on-site presence expected)

Engagement: Part-time contract, 6 months, with potential to extend or evolve

Reports to: CEO

Structure: Heavier upfront commitment during the first 60–90 days to build core systems, tapering to an estimated ~10+ hours/week of ongoing ownership thereafter

About Veritas

Veritas is a fast-growing life sciences company that engineers biopolymers to create sustainable agricultural inputs and substrates for commercial horticulture. Our products are distributed globally through an exclusive distribution partnership with a major international horticulture company, and we're entering a steep commercial ramp. We're a lean team of 8 preparing for significant scale.

About the Role

We're looking for a hands-on, strategically minded finance leader to build our finance function from the ground up. Today, financial operations are run informally by the founders with support from a part-time bookkeeper. Our business model is unusually nuanced for a company our size: multi-product royalty and gross-margin-share agreements with dynamic splits, tiered volume pricing on both the supplier and customer side, prepaid inventory arrangements, co-manufacturing relationships, and monthly reconciliation obligations with our distribution partner.

This role is about creating the structure, accuracy, and accountability that let the founders stop living in the financial detail — and that make the company audit-ready and acquisition-ready. The right person will build systems designed to outlast them: if you left tomorrow, the processes should keep running with the right team.

Key Responsibilities

Financial modeling & reporting

Rebuild the company's financial model to an institutional grade — granular, dynamic, defensible to a board, investors, or an eventual buyer — including revenue forecasts by product, COGS, royalty splits, sensitivity to pricing tiers, and seasonal input-cost fluctuation
Own cash flow forecasting and the monthly reporting package to the CEO: royalties invoiced, forecasted royalties for the next six months, and validated costs by product
Work with R&D Director to model the R&D budget and establish visibility into monthly R&D burn by project
Support board and investor communications; potentially attend board meetings to present financials

Partner reconciliation & revenue assurance

Own the monthly reconciliation and royalty invoicing cycle with our distribution partner: validating gross-margin reports, calculating royalty invoices, and issuing overhead reconciliation invoices or credit notes
Establish a consistent communication cadence with the partner's finance/controller team; proactively chase POs, reports, and outstanding invoices so revenue isn't left on the table
Validate overhead cost assumptions (converting current per-tray/per-liter estimates to a per-kilogram basis consistent with the partner's ERP) and ensure invoicing is accurate — neither over- nor under-billed

Cost, pricing & contract tracking

Track tiered volume pricing across supplier contracts and customer agreements; verify supplier invoices against contracted rates and flag discounts, credits, and year-end reconciliations owed
Maintain accurate COGS models per product, including co-manufacturing processing costs, and identify cost-saving opportunities (e.g., order timing against volume tiers)

Accounting operations & systems

Bring the books to a clean, GAAP-compliant, accrual-basis, audit-ready state in preparation for a first audit within ~2 years
Oversee and assess the current part-time bookkeeper; make recommendations on that role/function
Reconcile QuickBooks with operational records (inventory, fulfillment, batch documentation) and establish a reliable inventory trace, including partner-facing inventory reporting
Evaluate and recommend the right accounting/ERP toolset for scale, and help automate order-to-invoice workflows to reduce manual work and error – eventually help us transition to proper ERP (1-2 years away)

Strategic finance (as needed)

Support ad hoc strategic work: acquisition evaluation, licensing deals, equipment financing/loans, and fundraising decisions

What We're Looking For

8+ years of progressive finance experience, including fractional CFO/controller or startup finance leadership roles at scaling companies
Demonstrated ability to build institutional-grade financial models (buy-side, fundraising, or M&A exposure strongly preferred)
Experience with physical-goods / inventory-based businesses — COGS modeling, inventory accounting, supply chain cost structures
Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, accrual accounting, and audit preparation
Comfort operating hands-on at a small company: you'll build the systems and run them initially, including reconciliations and invoicing, before delegating in time
A systems-builder mindset: documented, repeatable processes that don't depend on you
Excellent, responsive communication — this role is the accountable point of contact with our partner's finance team, suppliers, and our bookkeeper
High discretion and trustworthiness are non-negotiables
Bonus: experience with royalty/revenue-share structures, agtech/manufacturing, ERP implementations, or preparing companies for acquisition

Engagement Details

6-month contract, hourly or retainer arrangement to be discussed
Front-loaded scope: expect an intensive initial build phase (rebuilding models, cleaning up the books, establishing reconciliation workflows) over the first 60–90 days, then ongoing monthly ownership at a lighter cadence
Potential paths from here include a continued long-term strategic engagement or a transition plan to a full-time hire in 6-12 months as the role scales with the business
Compensation is dependent on experience
