Purpose of Director of Advancement:
The Senior Director of Development is responsible to the Executive Director for directing the organization’s fundraising, including creation and implementation of the organization’s development plan; cultivation and solicitation of donors; management of development staff, events, grants, record keeping; and management of pertinent development fiscal and financial goals. The Senior Director of Development is a member of NDI New Mexico’s senior management leadership team.
Primary Responsibilities:
Development and Management of Development Functions
Responsible, with executive staff and the NDI New Mexico Board of Directors, for achieving the organization’s annual, capital, legacy, and endowment development goals as established through the annual and long-range planning process.
Responsible, in conjunction with the Marketing and Development Staff, and Board Development Committees, to create an annual plan for achieving above goals including supporting all fundraising committees.
Responsible for managing Development staff (team of approximately 10) to set priority goals and work plans, achieve fundraising goals, ensure successful communication strategies and overall coordination and support of organizational long-range plan, priorities, and objectives.
Responsible for developing new sources of contributed income including individual, corporate, foundation, and government program services funding.
Creates and maintains a personal annual portfolio of approximately 150 individual and corporate prospects and donors. Donor strategies include: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors via one-on-one meetings, telephone conversations, written correspondence, and emails.
Works with staff and board members to maximize the portfolio process and build major donor activity principally in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, with the goal of increasing membership in the Founders Circle and Circle of Excellence and meeting the annual giving goals.
Ensures the integrity and effective utilization of the organization’s donor database/CRM, including data management, prospect tracking, reporting, and gift acknowledgement process.
Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive donor stewardship and recognition program to strengthen donor engagement, retention, and long-term philanthropic support.
Oversee grant development activities, including identifying funding opportunities, coordinating proposal development, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, and cultivating relationships with institutional funders.
Functional Management, Board, and Administration
Directs Development staff including direct reports: Santa Fe Development Director, , Albuquerque Events Manager, Government and Relations Manager, Albuquerque Development Director, and Grant Manager and sets direction for additional team members including Grant Writer, Development Associate, and other positions as needed.
Structures department to deliver on goals and priorities; works with managers on job design and performance management; coaches and/or teaches what is required to develop team.
Delegate operational plan, budgeting, and other functional projects to direct reports and establish and follow through on accountability.
Motivates and inspires all team members to engage in vision.
Leads through measures such as goals and KPIs agreed to with the Executive Director.
Coordinates with Executive Director to cultivate and communicate with the Board of Directors.
Participates and supports the preparation of quarterly board meetings including development of the board packet and writing reports as needed.
Sets goals and oversees board development committees including
Engagement, Gala, Corporate Council, and others as needed.
Attends and contributes to Executive, Finance, and other committees as needed.
Designs and recommends staffing structure and positions to Executive Director for final decisions; works with human resources to staff, hire, and on-board new development employees.
Financial Management
Prepares annual development budgets and income projections in conjunction with Senior Director of Finance.
Monitors and adjusts income and development expenditures to ensure budget compliance.
Manages team accountability to ensure NDI New Mexico processes and established requirements are followed for all contributions including grants compliance and grants reporting, in coordination with Senior Director of Finance and Grant Manager.
Signs contracts, checks, and other documents as needed.
Organizational Executive Leadership
Leads the business as a key member of the senior management business team; serves as leader of organizational culture, core values and practices.
Analyzes and assimilates information to gain insights related to business practices, direction, and projects; raising issues to the Executive Director or Senior Management Team as appropriate.
Builds relationships—up, down, cross-functionally for the senior leadership team’s, customers’, and overall organization’s benefit; influencing others.
Leads group process effectively, including team building, project management and/or group facilitating staff or volunteer teams/groups.
Communicates powerfully and prolifically using clear and concise communication—written and oral; Effective at conflict resolution and breaking down communication barriers between departments or locations; strong presentation skills to groups.

Coaches and mentor’s others through performance, career and skill development coaching; provide effective encouragement and feedback to assist work group members to solve problems and reach higher levels of performance.
Solves problems effectively and applies scenario-building to creatively choose new ways to handle challenges or opportunities as they arise.
Performs other duties as assigned in support of the organization's mission and strategic priorities.
Working Conditions, Environment and Physical Requirements:
Functions performed in a variety of environments including: NDI New Mexico offices, schools, residency sites, donor homes and offices, and other locations
Requires reimbursable in-state travel to NDI New Mexico locations, participating schools, donor locations, residency sites, and community events (may also include out-of-state travel from time to time).
Requires weekend and evening hours as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Job Specific Requirements:
College Degree
A minimum of five years’ experience in fund development with a strong preference for experience working in the non-profit sector as a fundraiser.
A minimum fundraising track record of $5 Million annual and $15 Million capital.
Oversight of 7 – 10 fundraising staff.
A willingness to collaborate with the Executive Director on meeting organizational goals.
Knowledge of New Mexico market extremely helpful.
Experience working for an organization with multiple locations is extremely helpful.
Strong marketing background is highly preferred. Experience developing and executing marketing strategies, building community partnerships, and supporting outreach and fundraising efforts will be considered a significant asset for this role
