EXECUTIVE CHEF

Very unique position to live on site (private quarters) included in package. Meals included and relocation paid for. Position Summary

This property seeks a creative, grounded, and highly capable culinary leader to oversee all aspects of dining operations across our retreat and hospitality campus. The Executive Chef (“Chef”) is responsible for the overall leadership, quality, culture, and financial performance including menu development, food production, staff supervision, inventory and purchasing, food safety, and guest satisfaction.

This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both operational discipline and genuine hospitality. The ideal candidate is an experienced chef and manager who thrives in a high-volume, mission-driven environment and can balance creativity with consistency, mentorship, and accountability.

The chef reports to the Director of Hospitality and works closely with Guest Services, Housekeeping, Programs, Facilities, and Events teams.

Essential ResponsibilitiesCulinary Leadership & Food Production

Lead all day-to-day kitchen and dining operations.
Prepare and oversee high-quality meals for guests, staff, conferences, retreats, workshops, and special events.
Manage seasonal menus that balance quality, creativity, guest expectations, labor realities, and budget targets.
Maintain consistent standards for presentation, flavor, cleanliness, and hospitality.
Adapt menus and production plans to changing guest counts and operational demands.
Accommodate dietary restrictions and allergens with professionalism and care.
Support catered functions for private groups and events

Staff Leadership & Team Culture

Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate kitchen staff.
Foster a positive, accountable, and respectful kitchen culture.
Mentor cooks and support staff through hands-on teaching and skill development.
Establish clear expectations around communication, timeliness, cleanliness, and professionalism.
Work collaboratively with supervisors and peers to address performance concerns and operational issues early and constructively.
Help build systems that reduce burnout and improve consistency and delegation.

Financial & Operational Management

Manage food and kitchen labor costs in alignment with departmental budgets and organizational goals.
Monitor inventory, purchasing, waste, and portion control.
Maintain accurate ordering and receiving systems.
Develop and improve kitchen systems, prep processes, and production workflows.
Participate in annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
Track and analyze departmental performance including food costs, labor utilization, and guest feedback.

Guest Experience & Hospitality

Model warm, genuine hospitality for guests and staff.
Maintain visible leadership presence during service periods.
Respond thoughtfully and professionally to guest feedback and operational challenges.
Collaborate with Guest Services and Events teams to ensure smooth communication around schedules, counts, dietary needs, and special programs.
Recognize that dining experiences significantly shape guests’ overall impression.

Health, Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with all applicable food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
Maintain safe and organized kitchen facilities.
Ensure proper food handling, storage, labeling, cleaning, and temperature controls.
Maintain ServSafe certification or equivalent food safety certification.
Support workplace safety and proper equipment use.

QualificationsRequired

Significant professional culinary and kitchen management experience.
Experience supervising teams in high-volume food service environments.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic hospitality setting.
Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and peak operational periods as needed.

Preferred

Executive chef, retreat center, hotel, camp, conference center, or institutional dining experience.
Experience with buffet-style and high-volume meal service.
Budgeting and inventory management experience.
Experience working in nonprofit, mission-driven, educational, or retreat environments.
Familiarity with Southwestern, regional, seasonal, or culturally grounded cuisine.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills are welcomed.
