GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Medical Laboratory Assistant/Lab Scientist will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory. They will monitor the status of the workflow of the tasks involved and shall prioritize each task, coordinate performance of tasks by other phlebotomists, and report frequently and directly to the Laboratory Supervisor on the completion of tasks. In addition to routine phlebotomy duties, the Laboratory Assistant/Lab Scientist shall be responsible for the following: Phlebotomy, maintenance, quality control, proficiency testing, and performing CLIA-waived and moderate complexity testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

Performs daily blood draws via venipuncture as directed and monitored by the Laboratory Supervisor on patient halls and/or laboratory draw station.

Responsible for accurately receiving, ordering, processing, labeling, and auditing specimens according to established procedure.

Learns and maintains appropriate knowledge of all computer systems and test ordering practices, ensuring all specimens are properly entered in all computer systems.

Performs and documents quality assurance checks and provides correction/maintenance under supervision of the Lab Supervisor.

Assists in maintaining supply room inventory, notifying supervisor/designee when supplies are low.

Maintains competency in venipuncture skills and processing of lab and specimen collection as directed by and monitored by the Laboratory Supervisor.

Performs pre-analytical quality assurance checks on specimens and enters physician Laboratory test orders into the LIS. Communicates with physicians and medical staff to clarify orders and troubleshoot ordering issues.

Performs waived testing under the direction of the Laboratory Technical Supervisor. Point of Care Testing, including collection, testing, and reporting as it relates to job position.

Runs specimens through the automated Hematology, Coagulation, Urine, and Chemistry analyzers, reviewed and signed out by the Lab Supervisor.
PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to applicants with clinical laboratory experience and one or more of the following:
Education/Training:
-
Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science, OR
-
Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology, OR
-
Certificate from an accredited college or university in a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) or Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program
Experience:
-
1–3 years of phlebotomy experience and successful completion of a certified phlebotomy training program
-
1–3 years of clinical laboratory experience preferred
-
1–3 years of specimen processing experience preferred

Experience performing Laboratory Assistant duties, including:
-
Phlebotomy
-
Specimen processing
-
Computer/data entry
-
CLIA-waived testing
-
Positive customer/patient interactions
Certifications:
-
Clinical/Medical Laboratory Assistant (CLA/MLA) certification
-
ASCP or AMT certification
KNOWLEDGE:
-
Knowledge of laboratory research principles.
-
Knowledge of highly technical electronic analyzers and basic analytical chemistry.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)
Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Assistant
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Assistant
