The University of Evansville Department of Athletics is seeking a dedicated, student-centered, and collaborative athletic training professional to join our Sports Medicine team. This position will assist the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in providing comprehensive healthcare services for University student-athletes while also supporting the School of Health Sciences Athletic Training Program through classroom instruction and clinical education.
The successful candidate will serve as the primary athletic trainer for either baseball or softball and may be assigned additional sport coverage as determined by the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. This position combines clinical athletic training responsibilities with teaching and clinical supervision duties, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to both student-athlete health and athletic training education.
Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Athletic Trainer / Instructor will balance athletic training services, educational responsibilities, and administrative duties. Primary responsibilities include:
Athletic Training & Sports Medicine
- Provide prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses for assigned student-athletes.
- Develop and implement injury prevention and rehabilitation programs in collaboration with the Sports Medicine team.
- Deliver healthcare education and counseling to student-athletes.
- Communicate effectively with student-athletes, physicians, coaching staff, and parents, when appropriate, regarding injury status and treatment plans.
- Coordinate and provide medical coverage for practices, competitions, and team travel.
- Collaborate with physicians and allied healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for student-athletes.
- Maintain accurate electronic medical records and injury documentation.
- Assist with insurance claim processing and related administrative functions.
- Support scheduling and coordination of medical coverage for home and away athletic events.
Teaching & Clinical Education
- Provide instruction within the School of Health Sciences Athletic Training Program.
- Serve as a clinical preceptor and mentor for Athletic Training students.
- Supervise, educate, and evaluate Athletic Training students and athletic training interns.
- Assist with recruitment and retention efforts for the Athletic Training Program.
- Promote professional development and evidence-based practice among students.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records related to athletic training services, student clinical experiences, and insurance processing.
- Ensure compliance with University, NCAA, BOC, state licensure, and accreditation requirements.
- Participate in departmental meetings, professional development activities, and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Board of Certification (BOC) certification.
- Indiana Athletic Trainer License or eligibility for licensure.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, students, faculty, coaches, healthcare providers, and parents.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting and carrying equipment and supplies.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, holidays, and team travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous collegiate athletic training experience.
- Teaching experience in higher education.
- Experience serving as a clinical preceptor for athletic training students.
- Experience with athletic insurance claims processing and documentation systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to student learning and mentorship.
Working Conditions
This position requires regular evening and weekend work, extensive athletic event coverage, and team travel. The successful candidate will function in both clinical and academic environments and will serve as an instructor and clinical supervisor within the Athletic Training Program.
