Full Job Description

At Morris County Prevention is Key, we believe in the transformative power of substance use recovery. We are looking for Peer Recovery Specialists who are passionate about helping others succeed and ready to make a difference in the lives of individuals working towards long-term recovery. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Recovery Specialists to join our team. The Peer Recovery Specialist will work collaboratively with clients to foster recovery, promote resilience, and enhance their quality of life through effective interventions and support strategies. Who we are:

Prevention is Key/CARES is a Non-Profit Organization providing Prevention and Recovery Services in eight counties in New Jersey. We have been doing this work for 35 years and have a proven track record for success. We operate on a multiple pathways approach to recovery, indicating the participant is in charge of identifying their recovery pathway ranging from complete abstinence based to harm reduction forms of recovery.

General Summary: Case Manager/Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) must have a working knowledge of SAMHSA’s Four Dimensions that Support a Life in Recovery as well as that of the drug and alcohol treatment system and a demonstrated commitment to the recovery community. The PRS’s role is to support participants in achieving and maintaining recovery from a substance use disorder. The PRS will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, advisor and motivator to both actively using participants and recovering participants in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide person-centered peer recovery support using motivational interviewing, strengths-based engagement, and other evidence-informed practices.
Use lived experience appropriately and ethically to promote hope, self-efficacy, self-advocacy, and recovery engagement.
Collaborate with participants to develop individualized recovery-management plans with measurable and sustainable goals.
Administer approved recovery-capital and engagement tools and use the results to guide service planning.
Connect participants with treatment, housing, employment, education, health, mutual-aid, and other community resources.
Identify barriers to service participation and collaborate with participants and community partners to develop practical solutions.
Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential documentation in electronic health records (EHRs), program databases, and required grant-reporting systems.
Conduct community outreach and build collaborative relationships with treatment providers, courts, law enforcement, recovery organizations, and other stakeholders.
Support achievement of program goals, service-quality standards, grant deliverables, and participant-outcome requirements.
Participate in supervision, team meetings, professional development, and continuous quality-improvement activities.
Other duties as directed by Management.

Qualifications:

Strong critical thinking and sound judgement skills.
Problem-solving ability in complex situations.
Ability to assess needs and prioritize next steps.
Understanding of professional boundaries and ethical decision-making.
Adaptability in community-based settings and ability to work closely with community partners.
Accurate documentation and follow-through.
Ability to distinguish peer support from clinical treatment.
Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
Positive team member with strong work ethic.
Motivational and encouragement skills necessary.

Education and Experiences:

Bachelor’s degree preferred in relevant course of study (Psychology, Counseling, Social Sciences, Education, Health Sciences).
Previous peer-support, case-management, behavioral-health, harm-reduction, or community-outreach experience.
Experience with motivational interviewing, recovery-capital assessment, grant-funded programs, or multidisciplinary collaboration.
Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
Must acquire Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credential issued by the APCBNJ within six months of employment.
Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
Valid NJ State Driver’s license in good standing and reliable transportation.
