Fairbanks Rescue Mission is a Christ-centered, faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ by providing shelter, hope, and transformational services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. For over 75 years, we have served Interior Alaska by operating the region's only year-round emergency shelter while providing meals, case management, residential recovery support, and pathways toward stability. Position Summary
The Finance & Accounting Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the financial and accounting operations of Fairbanks Rescue Mission. This position ensures the integrity of the organization's financial records, maintains compliance with applicable accounting standards and grant requirements, and provides accurate financial reporting to executive leadership and the Board of Directors. Responsibilities include budgeting, financial planning and analysis, cash management, grant administration, internal controls, audit coordination, and oversight of the organization's accounting functions.
As a strategic financial partner to executive leadership, the Finance & Accounting Manager provides sound financial guidance to support informed decision-making, organizational sustainability, and responsible stewardship of the Mission's resources. This position is committed to conducting all financial activities with integrity, accountability, transparency, and excellence while supporting Fairbanks Rescue Mission's Christ-centered mission and values.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Direct and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and cash management.
- Monitor organizational cash flow and liquidity.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Develop financial analyses to support Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Assist with long-range financial planning and forecasting.
Budgeting
- Lead the annual organizational budgeting process.
- Monitor departmental budgets and provide variance analyses.
- Prepare financial projections and cash flow forecasts.
- Recommend budget adjustments based on operational needs.
Grant & Contract Administration
- Oversee financial management of federal, state, local, and private grants.
- Ensure expenditures comply with grant agreements and funding requirements.
- Prepare financial reports and reimbursement requests.
- Monitor restricted funds and grant budgets.
- Coordinate financial documentation for grant audits and monitoring.
Accounting & Internal Controls
- Maintain the integrity of the organization's accounting system.
- Establish and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
- Review reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close activities.
Compliance & Audit
- Coordinate annual financial audits and Single Audits.
- Serve as primary contact with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Prepare required financial schedules and supporting documentation.
- Maintain documentation supporting financial compliance.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly financial statements for leadership and the Board.
- Present financial reports and explain financial performance.
- Analyze trends and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes.
- Ensure timely vendor payments and customer collections.
- Review disbursements and maintain appropriate approval controls.
- Monitor aging reports and outstanding receivables.
Asset & Risk Management
- Maintain fixed asset records.
- Coordinate insurance renewals and claims documentation.
- Monitor organizational financial risks.
- Assist with contract review from a financial perspective.
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise accounting and finance staff.
- Provide training and guidance on accounting procedures.
- Evaluate departmental processes and implement improvements.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Mission Alignment

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
- CPA or CMA preferred.
Experience
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, MIP Fund Accounting, or similar nonprofit financial management systems).
- Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience.
- Experience with federal grant compliance, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), and Single Audits preferred.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting and grant management preferred.
- Experience coordinating annual audits.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge
- GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

Working Conditions
- Primarily office environment.
- Occasional evening Board or committee meetings.
- Additional hours may be required during audit, budget preparation, and year-end close.
