Job Description
- Independently provide clinical support services to the client.
- Perform specialized and technically demanding serologic and molecular immunohematologic procedures for clinical diagnostic transfusion support and research purposes.
- Support the Transfusion Services Laboratory (TSL), including the FDA-licensed collection facility where the majority of blood components transfused in the Clinical Center (CC) are manufactured.
- Provide transfusion medicine training for various training programs sponsored by the Clinical Center, including the accredited Transfusion Medicine Fellowship and Specialists in Blood Banking programs.
Minimum Education
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree is acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of blood bank experience in a clinical laboratory environment preferred.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification highly desirable.
- Experience in medical laboratory operations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.

Statement of Work / Responsibilities
- Perform routine tests and laboratory procedures in a medical laboratory used to diagnose and treat diseases.
- Prepare chemical reagents properly and replace expired reagents or defective products to ensure the validity of patient results.
- Operate laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, dry bath incubators, and blood bank refrigerators.
- Perform blood typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, and antibody identification procedures.
- Independently resolve routine RBC blood group antibody problems and perform moderately complex testing in consultation with a technical specialist.
- Perform component manufacturing duties, including preparation of frozen plasma, leukocyte-reduced RBCs, buffy coats from whole blood collections, and pathogen-reduced platelets.
- Perform lot release and labeling for blood components.
- Evaluate testing and component orders for appropriateness based on screening criteria and communicate with the clinical care team.
- Report laboratory results to medical personnel or principal investigators.
- Identify and report critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow up according to established protocols.
- Document test and analysis findings and provide summaries to clinical and medical staff.
- Enter result data into standard spreadsheets and databases based on requirements.
- Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take appropriate action according to established protocols.
- Document quality assurance steps associated with testing procedures and report findings.
- Distribute samples to the appropriate laboratory analytical section or affiliate laboratories as instructed by laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Communicate with laboratory managers and clinical staff regarding supplies needed to maintain uninterrupted clinical operations.
- Provide technical information and support to internal and external customers.
- Respond to questions regarding analyte stability, reference materials, and statistical information.
- Serve as a resource for problem resolution and meeting client/customer needs.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Perform minor equipment repairs as necessary.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate laboratory supply inventory.
- Complete supply requisition requests and coordinate ordering and delivery with procurement staff.
- Use specialized clinical laboratory instruments and equipment, including Luminex, to provide testing results to researchers.
- Assist with maintaining and updating freezer inventories.
- Manage blood component inventory and arrange for the import and export of necessary blood components.
- Assist laboratory managers in complying with institute, department, and federal guidelines and regulations.
- Maintain documentation in accordance with NIH and HHS standard operating procedures and policies.
- Comply with laboratory SOPs, regulatory and safety guidelines, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Adhere to SOP and CAP regulations for data input in laboratory information systems, including information storage and retrieval.
- Comply with State, Federal, CLIA, OSHA, U.S. DOT, safety, and other applicable government and agency regulations.
- Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory testing using automated and manual methods in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
- Perform ABORh testing, direct antiglobulin testing, antibody screening and identification, RBC phenotyping, elutions, crossmatches, and isohemagglutinin titers.

Work Schedule / Requirements
- Position is classified as Tier I – Emergency Essential/Excepted.
- Requires availability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime hours.
Deliverables
