We are seeking a dependable, compassionate, and detail-oriented Overnight Crematory Operator & Mortuary Transport Specialist to join our growing team.
Position Summary
This overnight position is responsible for ensuring the safe, respectful, and efficient care of decedents throughout the overnight hours. The role includes performing removals from hospitals, nursing homes, residences, hospices, and medical examiner offices, operating our on-site crematory, maintaining accurate documentation and chain of custody, and preparing the facility for the following business day.
This position is ideal for someone who is self-motivated, works well independently, remains calm under pressure, and understands the importance of professionalism and compassion.
ResponsibilitiesCrematory Operations
- Operate and monitor cremation equipment in accordance with company policies and state regulations.
- Verify identity and maintain an uninterrupted chain of custody.
- Prepare decedents for cremation.
- Process cremated remains with care and accuracy.
- Package and label urns and temporary containers.
- Perform routine equipment cleaning and preventative maintenance.
- Maintain detailed cremation records and documentation.
Mortuary Transport
- Respond to overnight first calls throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
- Transfer decedents from hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, private residences, medical examiner offices, and other facilities.
- Complete all required transportation documentation accurately.
- Ensure respectful handling during every removal.
- Safely operate company removal vehicles.
Facility Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the preparation room and crematory.
- Prepare the crematory and equipment for the next business day.
- Restock supplies and notify management of inventory needs.
- Follow OSHA, safety, and infection-control standards.
- Assist with overnight emergency situations as needed.
Qualifications
- Previous funeral home, crematory, EMS, healthcare, transport, military, or public safety experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to lift and move decedents using proper equipment and lifting techniques.
- Clean driving record and valid driver's license.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Driver's License
- Professional appearance and demeanor.
- Comfortable working nights and responding to after-hours calls.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and treat every family with compassion and respect.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift, push, or pull over 100 pounds with assistance and equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb stairs.
- Ability to work in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles and mortuary equipment.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM or 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM
- Schedule determined based on operational needs.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
