We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and detail-oriented Funeral Assistant & Prep Room Technician to join our growing operations team. This role is essential to ensuring every loved one entrusted to our care is treated with the utmost respect from the moment they arrive until their final disposition.
What You'll Do
As a Funeral Assistant & Prep Room Technician, you will support the daily operations of our preparation room and crematory while assisting our licensed funeral directors and operations team.
Preparation Room
- Receive decedents into our care and verify identity using established chain-of-custody procedures.
- Maintain accurate identification and documentation throughout every stage of care.
- Transfer, position, bathe, and prepare decedents for cremation, witness cremations, family viewings, and funeral services.
- Dress and casket decedents with dignity and attention to detail.
- Apply postmortem cosmetics, hair styling, shaving, and grooming to create a peaceful and natural appearance for family viewings.
- Assist with restorative preparation and other non-embalming preparation techniques under the direction of a licensed funeral director.
- Prepare identification tags, personal effects, and required documentation.
- Prepare urns, keepsakes, and memorial items for release to families.
Crematory Support
- Assist with daily crematory operations.
- Prepare decedents for scheduled cremations.
- Set up witness cremations and private family viewings.
- Process, package, and label cremated remains.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the preparation room and crematory.
- Restock supplies and monitor inventory levels.
Funeral Home Support
- Assist transport staff with loading and unloading during removals.
- Set up visitation and service areas.
- Assist with urn releases and family pickups.
- Follow OSHA standards, infection-control procedures, and company safety policies.
- Maintain the highest level of professionalism, confidentiality, and respect at all times.
Qualifications
- Funeral home, healthcare, EMS, hospice, anatomy, medical, or related experience is preferred but not required.
- Willingness to learn postmortem care and preparation techniques.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Strong work ethic and the ability to work independently.
- Valid driver's license preferred.
- Comfortable working respectfully with deceased individuals.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely lift, move, push, and transfer decedents using proper equipment and lifting techniques.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and walk throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift over 100 pounds with assistance and appropriate equipment.
- Comfortable working in a preparation room and crematory environment.
Compensation & Benefits
- $20–$26 per hour, depending on experience.
