Responsibilities - What you’ll do
This is a Corrections Sergeant position that is assigned to and supervises a Mobile Custody Team and requires extensive travel statewide.
This position will have an official domicile at the Farmington Correctional Center in Farmington, MO. However, this position will be required to travel to DAI facilities across the state of Missouri to assist with staffing needs as approved by the respective Deputy Division Director. This position is eligible for retention/longevity pay, shift differential and overtime pay in accordance with departmental policy D2-8.4 Compensatory Time and Office of Administration’s Division of Personnel Differential Pay Guidelines.
While on assignment, the Mobile Custody Team Sergeant will be provided a state vehicle for transportation to and from the assisted facility, provided lodging while travelling and will be reimbursed for meals that are not provided by the institution or hotel in accordance with department policy D2-6.1 Reimbursement for Travel & Subsistence. The Mobile Custody Team Sergeant will be required to carpool in the state vehicle and may be required to reside with a roommate while travelling.
- This position will supervise the four (4) Corrections Officers assigned to the Mobile Custody Team. Candidates will be expected to conduct on-the-job training for Corrections Officers and develop expectations/monitor performance and work habits. The candidate will be expected to patrol living quarters, grounds and buildings to observe offender behaviors and the effectiveness of Corrections Officers.
- The candidate will be expected to conduct inspections for health and safety hazards; prepare/submit reports on offender violations of divisional or correctional facility rules/unusual offender behaviors/observed mechanical deficiencies/security breaches or failures. In addition, the candidate will be expected to discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders; refer serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; and promote rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes/discouraging undesirable behaviors/encouraging worthwhile activities.
- This position will also supervise movement of offenders inside/outside the correctional facility; conduct periodic counts of offenders; and search offenders and their living quarters for contraband. Candidates will be expected to arbitrate disputes and settle grievances among offenders, enforcing disciplinary measures when necessary; and report difficult disciplinary problems to an administrative supervisor.
- This position will perform other related work as assigned.
Qualifications - All you need for success
Minimum Qualifications:
Six or more months of experience as a Corrections Officer or Probation and Parole Assistant with the Missouri Department of Corrections; OR
One or more years of military service, or experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility.
Special Requirements:
- Ability to pass a background investigation administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
- Ability to complete Defensive Tactics and Standard First Aid/CPR training during Basic Training administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
By assignment, a position may require:
- Ability to complete and maintain firearms certification training administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
- Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

- A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
- A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing stipend if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.
The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!
