Position Summary
The Academic Supervisor is a ministry-oriented academic leader who supports the Academic Director and oversees the daily operation of the Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch (TCAR) academic program. This is a full-time position and requires a passion for excellence, a heart for troubled youth, strong organization, sound judgment, initiative, professionalism, and a genuine relationship with Christ. The Academic
Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a safe, calm, accountable, spiritually supportive, and productive learning environment for students and staff.
1. Daily Academic Operations and Classroom Supervision
- Supervise the TCAR classroom and oversee the smooth running of the academic program, including students and staff.
- Maintain a quiet, calm, controlled, positive, and safe school environment that supports learning.
- Administer and order classes for students; track progress and reset, extend, or adjust course dates as needed.
- Coordinate student schedule changes with academic staff.
- Conduct Classroom Culture Surveys and manage survey use for the Academic Department.
- Perform computer security checks and monitor student laptop use through monitoring software.
- Ensure teachers have taken attendance and have student-monitoring software active for all students.
- Oversee the organization and availability of classroom resource materials.
- Oversee Academic Department cleanliness, order, and organization.
- Help ensure student breaks and transitions are appropriately supervised.
- Update student sign-up sheets and coordinate with the Academic Director and haircut staff.
- Assign academic duties during events or circumstances that pull staff away from student supervision, including staff training, camping trips, projects, vacations, and personal days.
- Verify that all staff responsibilities and student coverage needs are met when team members step away from supervision.
- Assist the academic team when there is an above-average number of student issues or operational needs.
2. Staff Oversight, Accountability, Training, and Coverage
- Complete and oversee morning operational tasks, including:
- Ensure staff members meet dress-code and professional-appearance expectations.
- Make announcements and communicate important daily information.
- Identify and document students who may be at risk.
- Review teacher task lists and verify accountability.
- Complete and oversee end-of-day tasks, including:
- Review teacher task lists and follow up on incomplete responsibilities.
- Oversee staffing, attendance, scheduling, classroom coverage, and assignment of daily duties.
- Monitor when Academic Department team members fall behind on tasks and provide follow-up, support, and accountability.
- Track teacher coaching, performance, growth, and accomplishments for use in teacher evaluations.
- Mentor, orient, and train academic staff on school standards, department expectations, and effective support for students.
- Guide academic staff in developing effective, consistent, and appropriate responses to student behavioral issues.
- Be available and interruptible to answer staff questions and provide guidance regarding school operations.
- Promote professional teamwork, clear communication, and consistent implementation of Academic Department expectations.
3. Academic Records, Student Progress, and Support
- Review Academic Plans weekly to monitor student progress and staff accountability.
- Review academic records regularly and coordinate with hall teachers regarding accuracy, missing information, and needed behavioral interventions.
- Report significant academic-record, progress, behavior, or accountability concerns to the Academic Director.
- Provide accurate feedback regarding student behavior, performance, strengths, and concerns.
- Complete reports, records, and required documentation accurately and on time.
- Monitor insurance logging and other required Academic Department documentation to ensure records are completed and submitted on time.
- Maintain Academic Department spreadsheets, reports, logs, and archived records accurately and on time.
- Send academic department planning emails one to two weeks in advance, along with any other required reminders.
- Oversee student level-of-care changes and related academic transitions.
- Oversee and assist with student discipline issues in coordination with the Academic Director and appropriate program staff.
- Coordinate or oversee communication with parents concerning students' academic progress when assigned or appropriate.
- Ensure student mail is delivered to Case Managers.
4. Communication, Meetings, and Reporting
- Attend weekly meetings with the Academic Director.
- Attend weekly Academic Department meetings.
- Attend interdepartmental staff meetings.
- Submit daily debrief updates to the Academic Director regarding student and staff issues, including crisis, discipline, training, coverage, or operational concerns.
- Update intake and cadre emails for distribution to the Direct Care Director and Assistant Direct Care Director.
- Communicate schedule changes, student needs, staffing concerns, and operational updates clearly and promptly.
- Demonstrate active listening, sound judgment, professionalism, and effective verbal and written communication.
5. Testing, Administrative, and Departmental Responsibilities
- Oversee the Testing Center and manage responsibilities associated with GED and ACT testing.
- Maintain 4DX tracking, participate in related meetings, and monitor progress toward department goals.
- Manage all assigned responsibilities related to organizational credit cards.
- Update academic rules and student handbooks in coordination with the Academic Director and obtain approval before implementation.
- Step in for the Academic Director in the Director's absence or when otherwise assigned.
- Assist the Academic Director with projects, planning, reporting, staff support, and other departmental needs.
- Stay current on all assigned training and administrative requirements.
6. Discipleship and Spiritual Leadership
- Be able and prepared to lead students to Christ.
- Provide spiritual leadership to students and the Academic Department staff team.
- Encourage students and staff toward personal, spiritual, behavioral, and academic growth.
- Model a genuine relationship with Christ through conduct, communication, integrity, compassion, accountability, and service.
- Support the Christian mission, values, discipleship approach, and ministry culture of TCAR.
7. Paraprofessional Competencies
- Demonstrate competency, as appropriate to the position, in understanding the specific needs of persons served.
- Identify risk factors such as suicide, violence, self-harm, and other high-risk behaviors, and follow TCAR reporting and response procedures.
- Demonstrate crisis-management, de-escalation, and nonviolent intervention practices.
- Use appropriate basic paraprofessional intervention techniques and skills.
- Apply person-centered interventions and evidence-based practices as trained.
- Demonstrate motivational interviewing and effective interviewing skills.
- Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Maintain competency in other paraprofessional areas required by TCAR policy, licensing, accreditation, or training.
8. Professional Standards and Conduct
- Be punctual and professional in appearance and conduct.
- Exhibit a positive attitude, show initiative, and make effective use of available time and resources.
- Demonstrate sound judgment, emotional steadiness, and professionalism in daily responsibilities.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Respond flexibly to interruptions, changing student needs, staffing needs, and unexpected operational demands.
- Help maintain a professional, orderly environment that supports classroom learning and student accountability.
9. Events, Student Supervision, and Additional Duties
- Attend Camp Orr two times per year.
- Attend the ADE Summit annually.
- Attend two Reconnect chapel services per year and other scheduled Reconnect responsibilities as assigned.
- Supervise and interact with students during school, breaks, free time, recreational activities, trips, events, and other assigned activities.
- Work individualized hours as student supervision and coverage needs require.
- Perform additional duties or serve in other program areas when called upon, even when those responsibilities are not specifically listed in this job description.
10. Qualifications and Required Training
- High school diploma required; college degree and/or teacher certification preferred.
- General computer proficiency and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to supervise staff, organize multiple responsibilities, manage records, and communicate effectively.
- Complete all required TCAR training.
- Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification; training may be provided by TCAR.
- Complete Crisis Intervention training at least biannually or as otherwise required by TCAR.
- Become and remain PSNL certified, as required; training may be provided by TCAR.
- Be at least 25 years of age.
- Maintain eligibility to work in a Safety Sensitive position and meet all applicable TCAR employment requirements.
Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
