Salary: $40,000-45,000 / annually
OVERVIEW OF GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Performs year-round maintenance and repair to Head Start facilities; inspects, diagnoses, and recommends work to be performed to ensure upkeep and maintenance of buildings and select equipment. Work may include light carpentry, basic plumbing, HVAC, and painting. Performs minor troubleshooting repairs and adjustments of locks on doors, cabinets, desks, closets, door hinges, etc. Exercises discretion in identifying projects requiring the services of a higher skilled craftsperson by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Employee is expected to be responsive to others in a timely manner. Individuals must work closely with both internal and external customers. The position requires attention to detail to correct health and safety issues. Employee must work in both independent and team environments.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building systems operate efficiently and the physical condition of Head Start buildings does not deteriorate. Record maintenance and repair work performed and the costs of the work. Develop a checklist for routine maintenance and dates of repairs or improvements.
- Troubleshoot and repair clogged drains, change filters on HVAC units, replace light bulbs, install shelving, and other general maintenance repairs.
- Diagnose problems and recommend the type of maintenance needed to correct or improve facility or equipment.
- Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of problems or defects. Observe or obtain information from all relevant sources. Analyze information and evaluate results to select the best solution to solve problems.
- Perform light carpentry duties such as:
- Hang doors or repair the same
- Paint Make drywall repairs
- Install weather stripping.
- Ensure facilities and grounds meet safety and health requirements as set forth and enforced by the Head Start Performance Standards; local fire, building and health departments; and Day Care Licensing Standards.
- Order supplies as needed. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment. Keep equipment in proper and safe working condition.
- Perform related duties as directed by the supervisor in accordance with performance standards, policies, SOPs, and applicable regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Employee reports directly to the Facilities Manager.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
Experience: Six months to one-year related experience and/or training. An AA in Carpentry, Building, or related field would be preferred
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Computer Skills
Employee should have knowledge of Internet software to research sound maintenance and repair possibilities and to locate potential vendors to perform work requiring higher skills. Employee will need minimal exposure to computer systems to log in and out of the Agency timekeeping system to maintain electronic timesheets.
Other Requirements
Employee must be able to use common hand and power tools, with experience as a general repair worker with skills to perform routine electrical, plumbing, carpentry and preventive maintenance.
He or she must have knowledge of building code standards, daycare licensing standards as they relate to facilities and equipment, and Head Start Performance Standards regarding facilities.
Employee must be able to work well with a variety of people.
Employee must be able to pass a criminal record background check and substance abuse tests.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to work and communicate with a wide variety of people
The employee must be able to pass a criminal background record check and post-offer employment and random substance abuse tests.
The employee must be able to complete a criminal background check and maintain an active Criminal Background Check (CBC) Qualification letter through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Child Development.
A good driving record with no moving violations is required with Valid Driver's License.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Background check with state and Federal law enforcement agencies required. Selected applicants must submit to a pre-employment substance abuse screening test and receive a negative result for the use of drugs and alcohol as specified in agency policies. Must submit and receive negative results for random testing of same. The employee must have a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Must be able to pass a post-offer physical examination.
