Position: Deputy Probation Officer

Reports To: Chief Juvenile Probation Officer
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Reporting to the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer, the Deputy Probation Officer assists with, and monitors the progress of juvenile probation clients. This is an unclassified, at-will position with an 180-day probationary period.
BENEFITS: $25+/hour, 40 hours/week. Hours are 8:00am – 5:30pm, Monday – Thursday and 8:00am – 12:00pm on Friday’s, with a 30-minute, unpaid lunch Monday-Thursday. This position may require work beyond normal business hours, including evenings and weekends.
County employees are enrolled into OPERS, and earn paid sick leave, paid legal holidays, and paid vacation leave after one (1) year of service in OPERS. Hancock County offers several medical/dental plan options, and additional coverage plans that are optional. A Deferred Compensation program is also available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed
as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned, as
needed.
- Conducts pre-dispositional investigations with assessments, files reports and makes recommendations to the Court; maintains files regarding clients; identifies placement alternatives; provides aftercare for clients returned to the community; consults with the Chief Probation Officer prior to filing violations of probations, violations of Court Orders, seeking Orders of Apprehension/Detention, and terminating youth from probation. Submits all documents to the Chief Probation Officer for review prior to submission for docketing.
- Receives and examines complaints, allegations, and reports from caregivers/guardians, law enforcement agencies, schools, child protective services, counselors, etc.; implements informal adjustments/sanctions to avoid Court action using graduated sanctions and positive reinforcement; attends Court hearings; may be required to conduct evening surveillance.
- Monitors juveniles placed on probation/Court supervision; investigates delinquency and probation allegations; consults with and makes recommendations to youth, families, prosecutors and attorneys alike; makes referrals to mental health agencies; directly observes the collection of drug test specimens; maintains confidentiality and professionalism; builds and maintains strong working relationships with community partners; may be required to attend in-state and out-of-state conferences.
- Must successfully complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of probation-related continuing education annually, including becoming certified with the Ohio Youth Assessment System Disposition Tool within the first six (6) months of being hired.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Bachelor’s degree with three (3) to five (5) years of experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides equivalent skills, knowledge, and abilities. LSW or CCDC a plus.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ABILITY REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements
- Requires the physical ability to operate a variety of automated office machines which include a computer, photocopier, fax machine, telephone, and drug/alcohol testing devices.
- Requires the ability to work under stressful and sometimes dangerous conditions.
- Requires the ability to perform work which includes running, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, and lifting a minimum of twenty pounds.
Mathematical Ability
- Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to determine percentages and decimals.
Language Ability & Interpersonal Communication
- Requires the ability to read and comprehend the English language, as well as a variety of informational documents, law enforcement reports, Court reports, lab reports, treatment plans, diagnostic reports and records, etc.
- Requires the ability to accurately and concisely prepare reports, performance appraisals, referrals, client records, files and related documents and information, using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, style, and Rules of Court.
- Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow instructions.
- Must be able to use and interpret legal and counseling terminology and language.
Environmental Adaptability
- Requires the ability to perform in an office environment and be exposed to the weather conditions in the community, on occasion. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver’s License.

In addition, the Court expects the employee to maintain a positive and respectful approach with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the Court. Further, the Court expects the employee to demonstrate flexible and efficient time management, the ability to prioritize workload, the ability to perform duties in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner, and to communicate regularly with the employee’s supervisors about work-related matters. The employee is expected to demonstrate predictable and regular attendance.
