About the Program:
Backpack Naturalist is a special afterschool program for students in grades K–4 that brings children outdoors to explore the forests, fields, and ponds of the Hudson Highlands Nature Center. Designed to spark a lifelong connection with nature, BPN combines unstructured nature play, hands-on science exploration, and outdoor adventure to inspire young stewards of the environment. The program runs after school from 3:45–5:45 PM, with a maximum class size of 24 students per day.
Position Summary:
The After School Teacher supports the day-to-day operations of the Backpack Naturalist Afterschool Program. Working closely with the Lead Teacher and other Nature Center staff, this individual will help ensure a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for children. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children and has a passion for the natural world.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in supervising and engaging students during outdoor activities, nature play, hikes, and science-based explorations.
Support the Lead Teacher with program setup, transitions, and cleanup each day.
Help facilitate nature-based activities, crafts, and group games.
Maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants.
Supervise snack time and support daily routines (handwashing, water refills, etc.).
Communicate professionally and positively with children, staff, and families.
Uphold the Nature Center’s safety policies and nut-aware practices.
Required:
- Experience working with or supervising young children (ages 5–10).
Interest in or appreciation for nature, outdoor education, or environmental science.
Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
Preferred:
- Background in education, environmental studies, recreation, or related field.
