About Little Water Prep: Little Water Prep is a growing K–5 public charter school in Poughkeepsie, New York, committed to providing a nurturing and academically rigorous environment for all students. As we enter our fifth year, we are deepening our commitment to excellence by upholding high expectations and consistent academic and behavioral standards for every scholar. We believe that, like water, every student is essential and capable of achieving at high levels when placed in environments that are both challenging and affirming. Now serving over 300 students within the Poughkeepsie City School District, we continue to grow as a community grounded in strong systems, meaningful relationships, and measurable results.

Job Summary:The School Nurse at Little Water Prep plays a critical role in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of all scholars in alignment with NYSED requirements and school health regulations. The School Nurse provides direct care for student medical needs, administers medications in accordance with physician orders and school protocols, and responds to illness and injury during the school day. This role partners with families, school staff, and healthcare providers to support students with chronic conditions and ensure compliance with NYSED-mandated health services, screenings, and documentation. The School Nurse promotes a safe and healthy school environment through health education, preventive care, and adherence to all applicable state and school health policies and procedures.

Key ResponsibilitiesStudent Health Services:

Provide direct nursing care to students in alignment with NYSED regulations and school health protocols
Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and documented in student health plans
Respond to illness, injury, and medical emergencies during the school day
Support students with chronic conditions through individualized health plans
Maintain accurate and confidential student health records

Health and Safety Compliance:

Ensure compliance with NYSED-mandated health requirements, screenings, and immunization regulations
Implement and monitor school health policies and procedures
Follow all emergency response protocols to ensure student and staff safety
Maintain a safe, clean, and well-equipped health office environment

Student Health Records, Physicals, and Immunizations:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date scholar health records in compliance with NYSED requirements and school policies.
Track required physical examinations, health screenings, immunizations, and other mandated health documentation.
Maintain and regularly update a comprehensive list of scholar medical conditions, allergies, medications, dietary restrictions, and other health alerts to ensure scholar safety.
Follow up with families regarding missing, expired, or incomplete health documentation.
Communicate relevant health information to appropriate staff while maintaining strict confidentiality.
Ensure secure storage and confidentiality of all health records in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA (as applicable), and school policies.
Support audits, compliance reviews, and state reporting related to scholar health records and immunization requirements

Health Education and Prevention:

Provide age-appropriate health education to students and staff as needed
Promote wellness, hygiene, and preventive care practices across the school community
Support initiatives related to attendance, illness prevention, and student well-being

Collaboration and Communication:

Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, and healthcare providers to support student health needs
Communicate regularly with families regarding health concerns and care plans
Participate in student support meetings, including IEP and 504 meetings when appropriate

Additional Responsibilities:

Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and a student-centered approach
Support school-wide events and emergency preparedness drills
Perform other duties as assigned

Physical and Logistical Requirements:

Respond quickly to student health needs and emergencies
Navigate school building as needed
Lift and carry up to 20 pounds of supplies or equipment
Maintain consistent on-site attendance during school hours and events

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN preferred)
Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license required
CPR/AED certification required
School Nurse certification or eligibility preferred per NYSED requirements
Experience in pediatrics, school nursing, or community health preferred
Strong clinical judgment, communication, and organizational skills

Compensation:

Salary Range: $65,000-$70,000 (commensurate with experience and certifications)
