Position Scope
This is a temporary, seasonal independent contractor engagement supporting the Winter/Spring 2027 tax season. The Tax Preparer will prepare Form 1040 individual income tax returns using UltraTax software, review client documentation for completeness, identify missing information, and ensure accuracy prior to final review.
The ideal contractor has experience preparing individual tax returns, strong attention to detail, and hands-on proficiency with UltraTax.
Essential Duties
Tax Preparation
- Prepare Form 1040 individual income tax returns using client source documents, including W-2s, 1099s, and other supporting tax records.
- Accurately enter tax information into UltraTax software.
- Review tax returns for completeness and accuracy before submission for final review.
Client File Review
- Review client documentation to identify missing information, discrepancies, or incomplete records.
- Communicate with clients and internal team members to obtain required documentation and resolve outstanding issues.
- Maintain detailed notes regarding missing items and follow-up actions.
Workflow & Compliance
- Complete assigned tax preparation work within agreed-upon turnaround expectations and seasonal filing deadlines.
- Prepare internal file documentation and return summaries as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of all client financial and personal information.
- Comply with applicable IRS requirements, firm procedures, and data security standards.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum one year of experience preparing individual (Form 1040) tax returns.
- Minimum one year of recent hands-on UltraTax experience.
- Minimum two years of professional data-entry experience with demonstrated accuracy.
- Active IRS PTIN required.
- Availability to accept work assignments throughout the Winter/Spring 2027 tax season.
- Availability to work throughout the August–October 2026 tax season.
- Secure home office with reliable high-speed internet access.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or coursework in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience with clergy tax returns, housing allowances, and minister tax issues.
- Experience communicating directly with clients regarding missing documentation or tax-related questions.
