At-Risk Behavior Interventionist/Mentor – Middle School

Building Administrator and Director of Student Support Services
Job Purpose and Focus
Function as part of a school team focusing on the successful implementation of a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Program, assisting supervisors upon request with the assessment of student behavior and planning strategies for students with severe behavior problems in school in order to have a successful academic experience. Provide direct services to assigned students whose behavior improvement plan identifies skills training as an intervention. Track and report discipline and attendance problems to administration, counselors and parents.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements
§ High school diploma or equivalent.
§ Associates Degree or equivalent, in psychology or related area preferred.
§ Minimum of three years satisfactory experience working with behaviorally challenged youth in a school or agency setting preferred.
§ Training in areas of passive restraint, functional behavioral assessment, writing and implementing behavior improvement plans preferred. The successful candidate must be willing to earn and maintain CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Prevention) training.
§ Training or experience in Restorative Practice or willingness to earn certification.
Essential Functions and Representative
§ Communicate with teaching staff, administration, counselors, as an initial step following the referral/request for assistance to gather information regarding teacher concerns and/or student’s performance.
§ Conduct in-class observations as a means to establish a baseline of behavior, to identify patterns, and to collect data for documentation.
§ Conduct home visits with students on caseload.
§ Compile the information needed to complete behavior assessments.
§ Facilitate communication and brainstorming between team members, to discuss techniques previously attempted, to assess intervention effectiveness and to explore alternative strategies and approaches.
§ Participate in Special Education pre-referral interventions as appropriate.
§ Assist with development of Behavior Interventions Plan (BIP)/Behavior Plans for identified students. Meet with all members of the team including parents to review/revise the BIP and to obtain approval. Implementation of interventions contained in the plans and facilitation of follow up meetings to review progress and revise plans as needed.
§ Review behavioral performance; compile data and chart progress as intervention effectiveness is assessed.
§ Conduct one-to-one sessions with students to help students develop skills and strategies to change their behavior.
§ Conduct peer/group sessions with students to assist them improving social skills.
§ Assist students within the classroom to use skills being taught with the intent to generalize these behaviors to the classroom setting as needed.
§ Provide teachers with specific information regarding alternate behaviors/skills.
§ Make regular contacts with parents to discuss their child’s behavioral progress and facilitate consistency between school and home.
§ Assist in the supervision of caseload students during structured and non-structured time.
§ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, school personnel and community agencies.
§ Ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and written format
§ Demonstrated enthusiasm and positive attitude.
§ Demonstrated willingness to be trained in district supported educational/management strategies.
§ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, school personnel and community agencies.
§ Mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the essential duties of the position.
§ Ability to make decisions in accordance with board policies and procedures with a minimum of supervision.
§ Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Terms of Employment
This is a contracted position through Genesee Education Consulting Services. The rate of pay for this position will be determined based on education and qualifications with the minimum hourly rate being $19.00/ hour. The employee is eligible for single subscriber health insurance.
Work Environment
Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Evaluation/Performance Measurements
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel. Criteria for performance include but are not limited to:
§ Attendance record
§ Use of data to improve student behavior, attendance and academic performance.
§ Positive relationships with students, staff, administration and parents.
§ Participation in specific training or workshop opportunities
§ Demonstration of interpersonal, time, conflict, and stress management skills
