ABOUT THE ROLE
Each staff member at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Shoals plays an important part in extending the mission of the agency in particular ways as outlined in the position description. The essential functions of the position include but are not limited to:
Day to day: Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks a program coordinator who will thrive in a growing organization that is dedicated to positively impacting more youth through high quality, one-to-one and small group mentoring. This position will connect youth, primarily boys aged 9-15, with positive adult role models that can help empower and inspire them to reach their full potential. The position is responsible for recruiting, enrolling, introducing, and supporting a caseload of matches in our Sports Buddies Program. This position will also be responsible for scheduling, organizing, and facilitating weekly sports and outdoor related activities for these matches. Position oversight will include quality program delivery as defined by BBBSA National Standards, maintaining and enhancing relationships, and a focus on ensuring that families and volunteers matched in the program have a safe, beneficial and positive experience.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable in volunteer recruitment settings and will actively seek out opportunities to spread the mission of BBBS and recruit male mentors. They will thrive in a fast-paced environment, is organized, friendly, able to multi-task, and passionate about improving the lives of underrepresented youth. This candidate must be passionate about volunteerism and engaging mentors and community partners from diverse communities, especially from within communities of color.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Responsibilities:
· Recruit, screen, and train potential male volunteers for appropriate program participation by conducting initial and update interviews, criminal background checks, references, etc.
· Assess parents and children for appropriate program participation by conducting initial and update interviews and obtaining collateral material for assessments.
· Provide timely and comprehensive assessment recommendations for program participation based upon assessments of each individual.
· Make matching decisions that have the potential to result in strong mentor/mentee relationships. Create match proposals and introductions.
· Maintain an active match support caseload and continually assess match relationships focusing on child safety, match relationship developments, positive youth development, and volunteer satisfaction. Match concerns and barriers are identified, addressed, and resolved as quickly as possible. Provide match support on a frequency set by BBBSA Standards, at a minimum.
· Assist with parent and volunteer orientation as needed.
· Ensure a high level of proficiency in applying child-safety and risk management knowledge, policies, and procedures throughout all aspects of the job function. Identify child safety issues for volunteers, children, and their families.
· Schedule, organize, and facilitate weekly or biweekly Saturday sports and outdoor related activities for volunteers and youth. Engage with mentors and mentees to build rapport and encourage relationship building.
· Available one night per week to support program activities and events, as well as to meet the needs of families and volunteers.
· Regularly collaborate with other program staff to ensure a smooth transition among functions.
· Maintain documentation to assure accountability, effectiveness, and efficiency.
· Apply practices and principles attained in BBBS trainings and on-going professional development to all mentors, mentees, and families.
· Participate in required trainings and on-going professional development in the areas of youth development best practices, mental health, child safety, and trauma informed practices.
Agency Support Responsibilities:
· Promote and maintain working relationships with partner organizations.
· Utilize educational opportunities, including required First Aid and CPR Certification, and related resources to improve agency service.
· Participate in agency events to assist with annual fundraising goals.
· Assume other responsibilities as needed.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
· Access to reliable automobile, have a valid driver’s license, and auto insurance.
· Interest and experience in sports and outdoor activities plus ability to participate.
· Experience with or willingness to work with diverse communities and organizations that support BBBS stakeholders and work to develop and maintain relationships with those communities and organizations.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Works well independently as well as in a team environment.
· Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
· Excellent organizational skills and ability to focus on details.
· Must have excellent time management skills and be able to multi-task and set priorities. Ability to effectively deal with changing job requirements and shifting priorities.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Adept at learning CRM software.
· Understanding of confidentiality and ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
· Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, human services, kinesiology, exercise science or related field.
· Assessment, intake, and interview skills preferred.
· Experience with youth preferred.
· Ability to perform at high activity level during indoor and outdoor activities and events.
