POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager and/or Office Manager, the Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for receiving and obtaining specimens for laboratory analysis and recording laboratory test results. Performs routine, special, and automated tests in clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology kit testing, and urinalysis to obtain data for use in diagnostics and treatment of diseases. Communications, logging, workload, and clerical functions are also assigned to the phlebotomist/laboratory assistant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Typical Essential Functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform standardized chemical procedures on body fluids and tissue.

Perform hematological procedures, such as complete blood counts, to provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology and urinalysis (including chemical and physical characteristics).

Perform a coagulation test using either the finger stick method or by venipuncture

Perform and provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating equipment or kit tests, such as immunologic tests for diseases such as Mono, Strep A, Flu, etc.

Performs venipuncture/finger sticks to obtain blood for test purposes.

Call, fax, or mail laboratory results to other facilities (call other doctors' offices, hospitals, labs, etc.).

Schedule and administer the Glucose Tolerance Test

Keep workstations and drawing stations stocked and cleaned

Notify the laboratory manager of any supplies needed as soon as possible

Order lab tests in EMR and requisition into LIS system.

Release orders from LIS

Able to order referral labs, process specimens for pickup, and approve results once done.

Perform all start-up procedures, such as running controls and recording temperatures.

Perform all shutdown procedures.

Review all lab results; inform nurses and doctors about abnormal results.

Collect, package, and box all infectious waste for pickup.

Collect and store all lab results at the end of the month. (Urine QC, glucose QC, temperature charts) File in appropriate places. Set up new QC and temperature charts for the new month.

Able to rotate and work within the department and satellite locations.

Schedule and collect drug screens (chain of custody and non-chain of custody).

Other duties, as assigned

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
CPT certification

Training

Graduation from an accredited course in phlebotomy.

Professional

Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet, professional manner.
Communication, customer service, or working with the general public, preferably in a medical care

facility.

General computer competence includes basic Word, Excel, and the potential to be trained in specific

software for patient information, billing, and communication.

Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred.
Documentation skills

Thoroughness
Follow all regulations by HIPAA, COLA, DHEC, and OSHA

Physical/Environmental

Ability to interact with the computer screen for up to eight hours a day (visual acuity required).
Ability to stand and bend over to perform venipunctures up to 8 hours a day.
Must have manual dexterity for use of keyboard.
Must be able to lift packages up to 25 lbs.
Must be able to assist patients if they have a hard time walking or getting up from a sitting position to

a standing position.

Ability to communicate via phone, mail, and in person to resolve disputes, solve problems, etc
