Position Summary
The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) is responsible for the overall leadership, regulatory oversight, scientific direction, and operational management of the pharmacy. As the designated Pharmacist in Charge, this individual serves as the primary professional responsible to the State Board of Pharmacy and ensures that all pharmacy operations are conducted in compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
Beyond regulatory oversight, the PIC provides scientific leadership in pharmaceutical compounding and formulation development. This role oversees the evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement of compounded medications while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, product quality, and operational excellence.
Working closely with Executive Leadership, the Compliance Officer, Pharmacy Operations, Telehealth partners, prescribers, and clinical teams, the PIC supports the company's strategic growth through innovation, technical expertise, and operational leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Regulatory & Pharmacy Operations
· Serve as the designated Pharmacist in Charge in accordance with State Board of Pharmacy requirements.
· Ensure full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations.
· Maintain compliance with FDA guidance applicable to 503A compounding pharmacies, DEA regulations, HIPAA, OSHA, USP <795>, USP <797>, and USP <800>.
· Oversee all prescription verification, dispensing, and compounding activities.
· Develop, implement, review, and maintain pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to pharmacy operations.
· Ensure pharmacy licenses, permits, and registrations remain current.
· Lead State Board of Pharmacy inspections related to pharmacy operations.
· Ensure pharmacy operations consistently meet professional, ethical, and regulatory standards.
Pharmaceutical Compounding & Formulation Leadership
· Provide scientific and technical leadership for the development, evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement of compounded pharmaceutical formulations.
· Oversee the development, review, and approval of Master Formulation Records (MFRs), Compounding Records (CRs), and formulation-related SOPs.
· Evaluate Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), excipients, packaging systems, and dosage forms to ensure compatibility, stability, efficacy, and patient safety.
· Lead formulation optimization initiatives for sterile and non-sterile compounded medications.
· Ensure scientifically appropriate Beyond-Use Dating (BUD) determinations based on USP standards, available stability data, published literature, and documented risk assessments.
· Evaluate formulation changes and support new product introduction (NPI) activities.
· Collaborate with prescribers and clinical teams regarding formulation options and therapeutic alternatives.
· Monitor emerging pharmaceutical ingredients, technologies, and compounded therapies to support portfolio expansion and innovation.
· Support investigations involving formulation failures, compatibility issues, stability concerns, or process deviations.
Quality & Regulatory Collaboration
· Partner closely with the Compliance Officer and Quality team to ensure all pharmacy operations are conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and internal quality standards.
· Support regulatory inspections and audits by providing pharmacy operational expertise and required documentation.
· Ensure pharmacy personnel consistently adhere to approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), compounding standards, and regulatory requirements.
· Review and address pharmacy-related quality events, medication incidents, and operational issues in collaboration with the Quality team.
· Promote a culture of patient safety, operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and continuous professional development throughout the pharmacy.
Clinical Responsibilities
· Verify prescriptions for clinical appropriateness, dosing accuracy, allergies, contraindications, and drug interactions.
· Counsel patients when required by law or clinical necessity.
· Collaborate with prescribers regarding individualized therapy and compounded medication options.
· Support medication therapy management and patient safety initiatives.
Controlled Substance & Inventory Management
· Oversee procurement, storage, inventory management, and dispensing of medications.
· Ensure compliance with all DEA controlled substance requirements.
· Maintain inventory integrity and minimize medication waste.
· Approve controlled substance inventory reconciliation and destruction processes.
Leadership & People Management
· Recruit, supervise, mentor, and develop pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, interns, and pharmacy support staff.
· Conduct performance evaluations and competency assessments.
· Ensure staff maintain required licensure, certifications, and continuing education.
· Foster a collaborative, accountable, and patient-centered culture.
· Support succession planning and leadership development within the pharmacy.
Strategic Leadership
· Partner with Executive Leadership to support business growth and operational excellence.
· Identify opportunities to expand compounded therapy offerings and improve pharmacy services.
· Evaluate new technologies, automation solutions, and workflow improvements.
· Support telehealth partnerships and scalable pharmacy operations.
· Develop departmental goals, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
· Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited institution.
· Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in the applicable state.
· Eligible to serve as Pharmacist in Charge under applicable State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
· Minimum of five (5) years of progressive pharmacy experience, including leadership responsibilities.
· Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a compounding pharmacy.
· Demonstrated hands-on experience in sterile and/or non-sterile compounding.
· Proven experience developing, evaluating, optimizing, or implementing compounded pharmaceutical formulations.
· Strong understanding of pharmaceutical formulation science, including:
o API characteristics
o Excipient selection
o Compatibility assessment
o Stability considerations
o Dosage-form design
o Formulation optimization
· Experience preparing and maintaining Master Formulation Records (MFRs) and Compounding Records (CRs).
· Thorough knowledge of Beyond-Use Dating (BUD) determination in accordance with USP <795> and USP <797>.
· Comprehensive knowledge of USP <795>, USP <797>, USP <800>, FDA guidance applicable to compounding pharmacies, DEA regulations, HIPAA, and State Board of Pharmacy requirements.
· Demonstrated leadership experience in pharmacy operations and regulatory compliance.
· Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience leading formulation development and new compounded product introductions.
· Experience with pharmaceutical stability studies, compatibility assessments, and formulation validation.
· Experience working within a 503B outsourcing facility or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment operating under cGMP principles.
· Experience with GLP-1 therapies, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), peptides, dermatology compounds, ophthalmic preparations, and other complex compounded dosage forms.
· Board Certification (BCSCP, BCPS, or equivalent) preferred.

Pay: $130,000.00 - $155,000.00 per year
