Full Job Description

Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Chief Engineer to lead our hotel’s Engineering Department and ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all building systems and facilities. This role oversees 24/7 maintenance operations, directs 20+ engineering staff, manages preventive maintenance programs, and ensures full compliance with safety and company standards. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong technical expertise and a commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences.

Responsibilities:

Safety, Compliance & Operations

Lead all safety initiatives, ensuring team members are properly trained, equipped, and prepared to perform their duties safely.
Oversee life safety systems, including fire alarms, emergency procedures, and compliance.
Respond promptly to safety hazards, emergencies, and maintenance issues to protect guests, employees, and property.
Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, building codes, environmental regulations, and brand requirements.
Direct maintenance and repair of all MEP hotel systems, including HVAC, refrigeration, guest rooms, kitchens, and building exteriors.
Own the preventive maintenance strategy (PM Works), ensuring 100% PM completion, accurate documentation, and long-term asset protection.
Must maintain 24/7 on-call availability for hotel emergencies.

Leadership & Department Management

Partner with HR to hire, onboard, train, and conduct performance reviews.
Manage departmental budgeting, payroll, and staffing levels to support operational needs.
Collaborate with all hotel departments to support smooth operations and exceptional guest service.
Maintain strong computer proficiency and train team members on required systems and platforms.

Capital Projects & Vendor Management

Oversee capital projects, renovations, and major equipment replacements from planning through execution.
Manage vendor and contractor relationships, ensuring quality work, compliance, and cost control.
Coordinate inspections, service contracts, and specialized system maintenance (elevators, fire systems, building automation).

Technical Expertise & Operational Efficiency

Apply advanced knowledge of building maintenance, including carpentry, painting, flooring, roofing, waterproofing, MEP systems, and mechanical equipment.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical documents, and equipment manuals.
Monitor inventory, manage procurement, and maintain strict cost control.
Analyze supply usage, purchasing trends, and inventory data to optimize spending and operational efficiency.
Lead sustainability and energy management initiatives to reduce utility consumption and improve environmental performance.

Guest Experience & Service Quality

Utilize FCS1 for service recovery to resolve maintenance-related issues quickly and professionally.
Support guest services by ensuring all facilities are well-maintained, safe, and fully operational.

Experience/Qualifications:

Minimum 5 years of management experience in engineering or maintenance roles required, with direct oversight of 20+ associates highly preferred.
Minimum 7 years of general building maintenance, hotel operations, or construction experience required.
Strong technical knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment.
Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
Ability to lift 25 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Education and Certification(s)/License(s):

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Advanced vocational training required
Technical school training, or a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred.
OSHA 10/30 and EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification strongly preferred.
Valid driver’s license required.
