Full Job Description

We are looking for a data analyst who is genuinely good at finding problems.

Z5 Inventory counts, values, and optimizes the medical inventory sitting in hospitals. The numbers we produce land on a health system's financial statements, so they have to be right. The data we start from almost never is. It arrives as item masters exported from half a dozen different ERPs, purchase-order history going back years, wholesaler price files, and spreadsheets that several people have hand-edited before they reach us. Your job is to take that and produce an answer someone can defend to a CFO.

This is a troubleshooting role first and a reporting role second. We are not hiring someone to maintain a dashboard. We are hiring the person who notices that a 3 mL syringe is priced at $61.16, recognizes that is a box price sitting in a per-each field, traces it to the rule that caused it, fixes it, and writes down what happened so nobody rediscovers it in six months.

This is not a senior role and we are not looking for a long resume. We are looking for someone smart and careful who wants to get very good at something genuinely hard. The healthcare domain, our tools, and our practices are things we will teach you. What we cannot teach is the instinct to be suspicious of a number that looks slightly off.

What you will do

Take client inventory data in whatever shape it arrives and get it into a form our portal and count teams can use, on the schedule the count is already booked for.
Hunt for the failures that do not announce themselves: silent nulls, values that are wrong but plausible, joins that quietly miss, numbers that are correct in the wrong unit.
Diagnose root causes instead of patching symptoms.
Quantify what you find. "Some items are affected" is not a finding. "1,843 product groups, 19,394 items, here is the dollar exposure" is.
Use and help maintain Python and SQL pipelines that run over hundreds of thousands to millions of rows.
Produce deliverables in two registers: a machine-loadable file where a stray character breaks the ingest, and a review workbook a hospital materials manager can act on without your help.
Know when not to fix something and flag it for a human instead.
Write down every hard-won lesson so the next person does not rediscover it.

What we are looking for

You go looking for trouble. The errors that cost money are the ones that do not throw errors. If your instinct on seeing a clean result is to check why it is clean, we should talk.
You see patterns, and you also notice the one row that does not fit the pattern.
You are precise about numbers. The difference between a case and an each is an order of magnitude.
You are precise about what you ask for. You can state a problem exactly, with the constraints and edge cases spelled out, so a colleague or an AI model hands back what you actually asked for.
You are proactive without being managed, and you escalate early when you are stuck.

Qualifications

Roughly one to three years of hands-on experience with data. Internships, coursework, research projects, or a job cleaning other people's spreadsheets all count.
Comfort with SQL: joins, aggregation, and the patience to confirm a join hit what you assumed.
Comfort with Python, or a credible willingness to get there quickly.
Solid Excel: formulas, pivots, lookups, text parsing.
The ability to write a precise technical description.
Enough self-direction to own a deliverable end to end on a remote team.
Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Data Analytics, Supply Chain Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, which we read literally.

Preferred

Experience with genuinely dirty data: encodings, type coercion, inconsistent identifiers, files that lie about their own format.
pandas, or comfort with SQL-first pipelines (we use DuckDB heavily).
Exposure to healthcare supply chain, materials management, or medical products.
Familiarity with ERP item master or PO data, medical product identifiers (NDC, GTIN/UDI), and units of measure.
Git, or prior use of AI coding tools.
