Executive Sous Chef – Full-Service Restaurant

Washington, DC | Full-Time | Base Pay $75K–$95K I Uncapped Targeted Quarterly Bonus of $4,200 ($16,800 Annual Target Bonus)

Ben’s Next Door (BND) is a proud, Black-owned, family-run restaurant and bar serving the U Street community since 2008—right next to the iconic Ben’s Chili Bowl. Our mission is to deliver a warm, familiar, and hyper-local "fun dining" experience that keeps guests coming back again and again.

Rooted in legacy and built on community, we exist to celebrate tradition while creating memorable moments through food, culture, and connection.

The Role
We're looking for a skilled and passionate Executive Sous Chef to help lead our back-of-house operations. As second-in-command to the Executive Chef, you’ll take a hands-on role in managing kitchen staff, maintaining culinary excellence, and ensuring a smooth and efficient operation. This role requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and a true love for the culinary craft.

What You’ll Do

Oversee and direct kitchen operations alongside the Executive Chef
Supervise, train, and schedule kitchen team members
Ensure consistent food quality, presentation, and speed of service
Maintain cleanliness, safety, and sanitation standards
Track food cost, inventory, waste, and labor efficiency
Assist with menu development, execution, and seasonal specials
Uphold recipe accuracy and kitchen discipline
Manage vendor relationships, ordering, and receiving
Lead by example and foster a respectful, team-oriented kitchen culture
Step in for Executive Chef when needed

What You Bring

2+ years in an Executive Sous Chef or similar leadership role
High-volume restaurant experience required
Culinary degree or equivalent hands-on training
Proven ability to lead and inspire a team
Expertise in food costing, scheduling, and kitchen systems
Strong communication and time-management skills
Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays
Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for long periods
A proactive, detail-driven, team-first mindset
