Job Description

Position Summary

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will provide strategic academic leadership to support and advance an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. Reporting to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and continuous enhancement of all academic aspects of the DVM program, from student recruitment through graduation.

The successful candidate will champion LIU-CVM's mission to advance veterinary medical education through excellence in teaching, research, service, and innovation while ensuring graduates are prepared to meet the evolving needs of the veterinary profession and society.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Leadership

Serve as a member of the University’s senior leadership team.
Provide leadership and oversight for academic affairs in collaboration with the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, and the Academic and Clinical Affairs teams.
Ensure delivery of a high-quality, integrated veterinary curriculum spanning foundational and clinical education that aligns with the University’s mission, strategic priorities, and accreditation requirements.
Develop, implement, and oversee academic policies and procedures, including matters related to student academic standing.
Foster collaboration among faculty, academic departments, and clinical partners to promote educational excellence.

Curriculum Oversight and Innovation

Chair the Curriculum Committee and contribute to related academic committees.
Lead ongoing curriculum review, assessment, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Evaluate curriculum effectiveness through assessment outcomes, benchmarking, and stakeholder feedback.
Coordinate curricular innovations and revisions that address emerging veterinary workforce needs and societal expectations.
Promote the integration of clinical reasoning, professional competencies, communication skills, leadership development, well-being, and technology throughout the curriculum.
Advance innovative educational strategies and emerging technologies that support effective teaching and learning, particularly for adult learners.

Accreditation and Regulatory Compliance

Provide leadership in maintaining compliance with accreditation standards established by the national accrediting body for veterinary medical education.
Coordinate accreditation reporting, documentation, and site visit preparation.
Ensure compliance with university, state, federal, and professional requirements.
Oversee assessment and documentation of educational outcomes to support accreditation and quality assurance efforts.

Student Success and Academic Support

Partner with Student Affairs leadership to promote student success, retention, wellness, and professional development.
Oversee academic progression policies, student performance review processes, and academic standing procedures.
Participate in student review and academic standing committees as appropriate.
Foster an inclusive, supportive, and student-centered learning environment.

Faculty Development and Engagement

Support faculty excellence in teaching, mentoring, scholarship, and service.
Provide guidance and mentorship related to curriculum design, outcomes-based education, educational innovation, and veterinary education research.
Promote faculty development initiatives focused on teaching effectiveness, assessment practices, educational technology, leadership, and professional growth.
Cultivate a collaborative culture of continuous learning and academic excellence.

Assessment and Continuous Quality Improvement

Lead the development, refinement, and maintenance of assessment systems that support evaluation of student achievement, courses, curriculum effectiveness, and institutional outcomes.
Collaborate with the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs to ensure rigorous evaluation of clinical education quality, consistency, objectives, and outcomes.
Utilize educational data, analytics, and evidence-based practices to inform decision-making and continuous improvement efforts.
Develop and monitor key performance indicators related to academic success, educational effectiveness, and program quality.
Work closely with Outcomes Assessment to advance institutional assessment goals.

Required Qualifications

DVM, VMD, or equivalent veterinary degree.
Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
Significant experience in veterinary medical education.
Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, academic assessment, and academic administration.
Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD, additional doctoral degree, and/or veterinary specialty board certification.
Expertise in outcomes assessment and continuous quality improvement.
Experience with competency-based veterinary education.
Demonstrated success in educational innovation and contemporary teaching and learning methodologies.
Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within academic and professional environments.
