Full Job Description

FinOps Analyst (Cloud Cost Optimization)

Location: Charlotte, NC (preferred) or Denver, CO
Type: Contract (12-month initial engagement, strong potential for extension/conversion)
Work Environment: Hybrid / Onsite

Overview

We are seeking a FinOps Analyst to support a large-scale enterprise cloud environment with $10M+ monthly spend across AWS and other cloud platforms. This is a high-impact role focused on cloud cost visibility, optimization, and stakeholder engagement.

This is not a reporting or dashboarding role. The data and tools already exist. This role is centered on analyzing cloud spend, translating insights into clear recommendations, and working directly with engineering teams to drive cost awareness and accountability.

What You’ll Do

Cloud Cost Analysis & Optimization

Analyze cloud spend across AWS (primary) and other platforms (e.g., GCP)
Identify cost drivers, anomalies, and optimization opportunities
Investigate unexpected spikes and provide root cause analysis
Recommend cost-saving strategies such as rightsizing, savings plans, and usage optimization

Stakeholder Engagement

Partner with engineering teams, architects, and technical leaders to review cloud spend
Communicate findings in a clear, business-friendly manner
Provide actionable recommendations and explain the “why” behind cost changes
Track follow-ups and ensure visibility into adoption of recommendations

Financial Planning & Forecasting

Support budgeting and forecasting for cloud usage
Perform variance analysis (budget vs. actual) and highlight risks early
Assist teams in estimating costs for new services and architectures

Governance & Best Practices

Promote tagging and cost allocation best practices
Identify gaps in tagging or cost visibility and guide remediation
Contribute to overall FinOps maturity and cost optimization strategy

What We’re Looking For

Required Experience

2+ years of experience in FinOps, cloud cost management, or cloud financial operations
Strong experience with AWS cost management tools (Cost Explorer, billing console, savings plans, etc.)
Exposure to at least one additional cloud platform (GCP preferred)
Experience working directly with engineering or technical teams

Technical & Analytical Skills

Ability to analyze cloud billing data and identify cost drivers independently
Familiarity with concepts such as reserved instances, savings plans, tagging, and cost allocation
Experience working with large datasets (CSV, Excel, or SQL)
Familiarity with BI/reporting tools is a plus

Communication & Soft Skills

Strong ability to translate technical cost data into clear, actionable insights
Comfortable engaging with stakeholders at multiple levels (engineers to leadership)
Consultative approach — able to influence without direct authority
Strong written communication (summaries, recommendations, follow-ups)

Nice to Have

FinOps Certified Practitioner (or willingness to obtain)
Experience in multi-cloud environments
Familiarity with FinOps frameworks such as FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification)
Experience using AI tools to support analysis or reporting
