Chambers Welding & Fabrication is seeking an experienced Shop Welder/Fabricator who is highly skilled in welding, fabrication, and metal repair. Because we work on a wide variety of projects and metals, the ideal candidate must be versatile, dependable, and comfortable completing both new fabrication and complex repair work.
This is a hands-on position in a fast-paced welding and fabrication shop. Applicants must be able to work independently from blueprints, shop drawings, measurements, and verbal instructions while consistently producing safe, accurate, and professional-quality work.
Required Welding Experience
Applicants must be experienced and comfortable using all major welding processes:
- MIG/GMAW
- TIG/GTAW
- Stick/SMAW
- Flux-Cored/FCAW
- Oxy-fuel cutting and plasma cutting
- Carbon arc gouging and metal preparation
Experience welding and repairing the following materials is required:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
- Structural steel
- Sheet metal, plate, pipe, tubing, and miscellaneous metals
Primary Responsibilities
- Fabricate metal components and complete assemblies from blueprints and shop drawings.
- Perform repairs and modifications on a wide variety of metal products, structures, equipment, and machinery.
- Read and correctly interpret blueprints, welding symbols, fabrication drawings, cut lists, and measurements.
- Lay out, measure, cut, fit, tack, weld, and finish fabricated components.
- Select the correct welding process, filler metal, settings, and preparation method for each material and application.
- Identify the type of metal being repaired and determine the proper repair procedure.
- Inspect damaged metal and identify cracks, wear, distortion, contamination, and previous weld failures.
- Use grinders, saws, drills, ironworkers, torches, plasma cutters, and other shop equipment safely.
- Check completed work for proper dimensions, alignment, fit-up, weld quality, and overall appearance.
- Control heat and distortion during welding.
- Produce clean, strong, consistent, and professional-quality welds.
- Follow AWS welding requirements, company procedures, and project specifications.
- Maintain an organized work area and properly care for company tools and equipment.
- Complete assigned projects within required deadlines.
- Communicate immediately when drawings, materials, measurements, or project requirements are unclear.
- Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proven professional experience as a welder/fabricator in a welding or fabrication shop.
- Strong working knowledge of MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding.
- Ability to weld in multiple positions.
- Strong metal repair and troubleshooting experience.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings, welding symbols, and measurements.
- Ability to accurately use tape measures, squares, levels, calipers, and other measuring tools.
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong attention to detail, fit-up, weld quality, and finished appearance.
- Dependable attendance and reliable transportation.
- Willingness to complete a welding test before employment.
- Ability to work safely in an active shop environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS welding certifications, including D1.1 or D1.5.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience.
- Experience repairing industrial equipment, heavy equipment, trailers, dumpsters, machinery, handrails, stairs, and structural components.
- Experience with both custom one-off fabrication and production work.
Physical and Shop Requirements
This position is performed in an active welding and fabrication shop. The employee must be able to:
- Stand, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and work in different positions for extended periods.
- Lift and move metal, tools, and equipment safely.
- Work around welding fumes, sparks, grinding dust, heat, noise, and moving equipment.
- Wear welding PPE, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, and other required safety equipment.
- Work in hot or cold shop conditions depending on the season.
- Maintain productivity while following all quality and safety requirements.
Quality Expectations
Every employee is expected to take pride in their work. Completed projects must be strong, properly fitted, accurately measured, and professionally finished. Sloppy workmanship, incomplete welds, poor fit-up, repeated measurement errors, and unsafe work practices are not acceptable.
