Part-Time Contract Position · Fort Walton Beach / Niceville, FL
We're looking for an experienced catechist, DRE, Catholic school teacher, or dedicated parish volunteer to coordinate the K–12 religious education and faith formation program for the Catholic community at Eglin Air Force Base. This is meaningful part-time work with a school-year rhythm, light summers, and a five-year horizon.
Good South & Co LLC, a small business federal contractor based in Charlotte, NC, is bidding on this contract and seeking the right person to name in our proposal. The position depends on our winning the award, with an anticipated start of September 1, 2026.
The Role
Coordinate the K–12 Catholic religious education program under the direction of the Catholic Chaplain/Priest:
- Sunday religious education classes (September through early June)
- Sacramental preparation — First Holy Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation — including parent sessions and retreats
- Recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer catechists
- Registration records, student database, annual calendar and budget
- Chairing the religious education committee within the Catholic Advisory Council
- Baptismal instruction for parents and godparents as requested by the Chaplain
The program follows the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) curriculum standards, and USCCB guidance.
Schedule
Approximately 20 hours per week (~1,120 hours per year)
- Sundays, on base: ~3 hours — classes, arriving 30 minutes early and securing the building afterward
- Mon–Thurs, on base: ~5 office hours weekly — days and times set collaboratively with the Chaplain
- Weekly team meeting: flexible, arranged around your availability
- Monthly Catholic Advisory Council meeting: ~2 hours, September–June
- ~5 hours weekly from home on your own computer
- Season: on-site September 1 through the first week of June. Summers are light. No classes on holiday weekends or scheduled breaks.
Compensation & Terms
- $26–29 per hour based on experience, 1099 independent contractor, paid monthly
- Annual pay increases with each contract year renewed
- Five-year contract horizon (base year plus four option years)
- No benefits provided
Qualifications
Required
- Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing — a letter from your current or immediate prior pastor is required
- Positive, self-directed, organized; comfortable with Word/Excel and recordkeeping
- Reliable transportation and a personal computer
- Able to pass background checks for working with youth on a military installation
- Willing to interview with the Eglin Catholic Chaplain as part of the selection process
Preferred but not required
- Degree in religious studies, theology, or education — a certificate of catechetical training also qualifies
- Two or more years in parish religious education, catechesis, or Catholic school teaching
- Familiarity with AMS catechetical standards
Completed within 30 days of starting — all costs covered by Good South & Co
- AMS Catechist Certification (valid 3 years)
- VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children" training
- Antiterrorism Level I awareness training (brief, online)
What's Provided
Office space, computer, supplies, and base access (CAC card) are furnished by the government at the chapel. The Catholic community worships at two locations on base — the Chapel Center (East Gate) and West Gate Chapel — with space assigned by the Chaplain.
