Full Job Description

Title: Kitchen Manager/ Chef

Reports to: Manager of Synagogue Operations

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Work Schedule: Full time (40 hours), onsite, Saturdays required

Kitchen Manager/Chef responsible for overseeing all aspects of a Kosher kitchen for a 133-year-old Jewish Congregation. This position includes daily kitchen operations, food preparation, and food cost management, while ensuring strict adherence to kosher laws (kashrut). Key responsibilities include sourcing and supervising Kosher ingredients, maintaining the kosher integrity of kitchen spaces and equipment, and coordinating closely with the volunteer Catering Department and the Rabbi. In addition, this role oversees event setup and breakdown, tablescapes, and décor to ensure that all culinary presentations and dining environments are welcoming, organized, and aligned with the vision of each event. This position requires strong culinary and operational management skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of or commitment to learning Jewish dietary laws. This is a 40 hour/week onsite position, Saturdays are required and limited late night events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Work closely with volunteer Catering Department and Rabbi.

· Kosher supervision: Inspecting and verifying all kosher ingredients and products, ensuring proper handling and preparation, and monitoring for any potential problems.

· Oversee all aspects of kitchen operations including inventory, food sourcing, and ensuring consistent delivery of foods.

· Planning and executing menus that meet quality standards while adhering to kosher laws, managing daily kitchen operations from preparation to service.

· Uphold high standards of food quality while ensuring strict compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations.

· Coordination with Catering Department and preparation of food for special events and programs, holiday meals and Kiddush luncheons.

· Managing inventory, purchasing kosher certified ingredients, and controlling food costs by staying within budget and monitoring stock levels.

· Setup and serve at functions, clean event area during and after events, break down the setup after events.

· Arrange buffet tables with food, beverage, and service items according to standards and policies set by the Catering Department.

· Maintain a positive and efficient work environment.

· Launder table linens after events in a timely manner.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

· 2-3 years of experience in kitchen management and food preparation.

· Open to learning Kosher laws and how to apply in a food service environment.

· Excellent food preparation skills with the ability to work well under pressure with an uncompromising pursuit of excellence and food safety.

· Creative ability to utilize leftover ingredients to supplement menus and reduce food waste.

· Meticulous in ensuring all Kosher standards and food safety regulations are met.

· Strong ability to multitask, while still being flexible.

· Team player with attributes of friendliness, reliability, flexibility, organization, honesty, and attention to detail.

· Formal culinary training, preferred.

· Ability to work Saturdays and some evenings.

· Self-starter and able to work alone.

· ServSafe Certified.

· Bilingual Spanish is a plus.

Physical Requirements

· Able to stand, walk and move around kitchen and service areas for extended periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per shift).

· Able to lift, carry and move objects up to 40-50 pounds (such as boxes of supplies, equipment, or food items).

· Frequent use of hands and arms for chopping, stirring, plating, and operating kitchen tools and equipment.

· Regularly requires to reach, bend, stoop, and twist while working at counters, ovens, and storage areas.

· Able to hear and communicate effectively in a loud, fast-paced kitchen environment.

· Requires close and distance vision, color perception, and depth perception for food presentation and safety.

· Able to work in hot, humid conditions near ovens, stoves, and dishwashing areas, as well as in cold storage areas.

· Able to maintain focus, accuracy, and composure during busy service times or high-pressure situations.
