JOB PURPOSE
The Shop Apprentice is responsible for assisting Shop Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment. The purpose of this position is to provide currently enrolled or recently graduated Diesel Technology majors with hands-on experience, enabling them to apply their academic knowledge and technical skills in a real-world environment. This position reports to and is under general supervision of the Shop Foreman.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work alongside experienced technicians to assist in the routine maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of heavy equipment, including engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and components.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspection on equipment.
- Master proper function and usage of hand and power tools.
- Perform simple repairs and assist in conducting diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems using specialized tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Assist in managing parts inventory, including checking in and organizing parts shipments.
- Aid in documenting completed tasks, including maintenance logs, repair notes, and parts usage.
- Wash, clean, and detail equipment that is being prepared for customer pickup or delivery, ensuring that it meets dealership standards for cleanliness and presentation.
- Ensure the shop and work areas are clean, organized, and safe by following proper safety procedures and standards.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
- Other duties and tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Actively enrolled in or recently graduated from an accreditation or degree program for Diesel Technology required.
- Foundational knowledge of diesel engines, electrical, and hydraulics.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be alert and is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a shop environment. Operational hours could be anywhere from 7:00am to 5:00pm with occasional needs outside standard business hours to accommodate meetings, training, and projects. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones and frequently requires the use of various hand tools and power tools. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
