Full Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly knowledgeable Sterile Compounding Pharmacist to join our pharmacy team. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with sterile compounding and a strong command of USP <797> and USP <800> standards, with a passion for maintaining the highest levels of quality, safety, compliance, and patient care.

This pharmacist will play a key role in overseeing our sterile compounding operations while also serving as a clinical and technical resource for our pharmacy technicians. A major responsibility of this position will be developing, training, and mentoring technicians in proper compounding procedures and aseptic technique.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee and perform sterile compounding activities in accordance with USP <797>, USP <800>, applicable state and federal regulations, and pharmacy policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with all applicable sterile compounding standards, including environmental monitoring, cleaning and disinfection, garbing, hand hygiene, aseptic technique, beyond-use dating, and quality assurance.
Provide hands-on training, education, and competency assessment for pharmacy technicians involved in sterile compounding.
Train technicians on proper aseptic technique, gowning and garbing procedures, cleaning and disinfection, equipment use, documentation, and compounding workflows.
Observe and evaluate technician technique and provide ongoing coaching and corrective training as needed.
Participate in initial and ongoing competency assessments for sterile compounding personnel.
Monitor and maintain compliance with environmental monitoring, personnel monitoring, media-fill testing, and other required quality assurance activities.
Review compounded preparations and associated documentation for accuracy, quality, and compliance.
Identify opportunities to improve compounding processes, workflow, safety, and efficiency.
Maintain accurate and complete records related to compounding, quality assurance, training, and regulatory compliance.
Stay current with changes and updates to USP <797>, USP <800>, regulatory requirements, and best practices in sterile compounding.
Serve as a subject-matter expert and resource for pharmacists and technicians regarding sterile compounding practices.
Promote a culture of safety, accountability, continuous learning, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or equivalent pharmacy degree.
Active pharmacist license in the applicable state and in good standing.
Extensive knowledge and practical experience with USP <797> and USP <800> is required.
Demonstrated experience with sterile compounding in a pharmacy, hospital, infusion, specialty, or similar setting.
Strong understanding of aseptic technique, cleanroom operations, environmental controls, and sterile compounding quality assurance.
Experience training, mentoring, or competency-assessing pharmacy technicians is strongly preferred.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
Ability to work effectively in a highly regulated environment and consistently enforce established compounding standards.
