Calling all digital content creators with an interest in ability advocacy, equine-assisted therapies and activities and veterinary sciences! If you have excellent content creator skills, we invite you to join us this summer to create an exciting chapter in your portfolio.
Founded in 1998, Great and Small in Boyds, MD provides adaptive horseback riding lessons, equine-assisted activities and equine-assisted psychotherapy to children and adults with a wide range of physical, developmental and emotional disabilities. We are seeking a creative, enthusiastic intern with a desire to help advance our mission by creating unique, engaging website material and social media content. You will be the “eyes and ears” of our program, capturing the magic that happens on the farm and sharing it with our community to drive engagement, donations, and volunteer interest. This is a unique opportunity to build a professional portfolio while contributing to a mission that changes lives through the power of horses.
This internship is for any person committed to the mission of Great and Small who is able to perform the primary responsibilities and meets the qualifications. A stipend is available; alternatively, SSL hours for high school students can be earned. Please note that interns in high school will not be responsible for the day-to-day management of Great and Small’s social media’s accounts, nor will they respond to persons who reach out to Great and Small through those accounts.
Primary Responsibilities
Content Creation & Management: Identify, plan, and distribute engaging content across social media platforms – particularly TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This includes writing and posting multimedia captions through the use of music (royalty-free), graphics (using G&S’s Canva account), and suggesting a social media editorial calendar. Updating and improving our website is also a key responsibility of the position.
Storytelling: By attending riding lessons, volunteer trainings and other daily activities you will be best equipped to capture "behind-the-scenes" stories and witness Great and Small’s impact firsthand.
Multimedia Production: Take photos and video/edit short-form videos (Reels, TikToks) of horses, lessons, staff and volunteers, ensuring you have completed waivers where applicable.
Community Engagement: Monitor and forward to staff comments and direct messages submitted to Great and Small through various social media platforms in a timely manner.
Strategy & Analytics: Interpret our digital analytics (engagement, reach, etc.) and advise in the development media strategies that help us build successful outreach campaigns.
Event Planning & Promotion: Help organize and promote on-site events, such as fundraisers, through digital channels. Willingness to attend events is strongly encouraged.
Qualifications
Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency with social media platforms (seriously, we won’t be able to teach you!) particularly TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram, Canva, and photo/video editing applications.
Industry Knowledge: General knowledge of the equine industry or therapeutic riding is helpful but not required; willingness to participate in a volunteer orientation and desire to become comfortable around horses and in the barn is a must.
Soft Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, adaptability, high level of empathy and ability to respect confidentiality and participant privacy is important. Must be able to take direction and collaborate with core staff. Sense of humor is a plus.
All applicants must be able to pass a background check and be trustworthy around vulnerable populations and have reliable transportation.
Where You’ll Work
This internship can be a hybrid of on-site and off-site work. Applicants must be willing to spend at least half of their time on the farm to capture the essence of Great and Small life. Hours can be flexible. This internship will report to the Director of Programs and Operations, although planning, direction and specific assignments will be a collaboration between the intern, the Director of Programs and Operations, Volunteer Coordinator and the Executive Director, and other team members as appropriate.
Compensation
The duration of this assignment is from June 22 through August 14, with a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week. This is a hybrid position and work can be completed both on site and off site. A stipend is available or, in the case of high school students, SSL hours as approved by each high school’s SSL office in advance.
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Boyds, MD 20841
