Free Union Country School (preschool through fifth grade) is located in Albemarle County, VA, just 15 minutes outside of Charlottesville. To this end, we use experiential, inquiry-based, and collaborative methods of teaching with attention given to academic and social development.
We seek a 4 or 5-day-a-week (or this could be split by two people each choosing 2 or 3 afternoons weekly) After-Care Leader for our Early Childhood group of 8-10 students daily.
Duties and responsibilities include: The After-Care Leader is expected to work their scheduled days (either all 5 weekdays or partial schedule of 2 or 3 weekdays shared with another person), from 2:45-5:45 during the weeks and days of after-care operation, facilitating all early childhood after-care activities under the direction of the Head of School, the Director of Business & Operations, and the Licensed Program Director. The After-Care Leader will complete all required background checks and online training prior to starting and will attend a new staff orientation in preparation for this position. Regular duties will begin in late August 2026 for after-care programming, continuing through the end of the school year, with the last day in late May, 2027.
After-School Leader duties include:
● Keeping up-to-date certification for first aid training, CPR & others as required
● Maintaining emergency contact information for attendees
● Keeping records of attendance & check-out
● Communicating with Business Office to coordinate billing
● Overseeing upkeep of grounds and equipment used by the program ● Planning activities that are varied and engaging for children ages 3-5 years old
● Notifying staff, administration and parents of any problems which might arise
● Closing the school and grounds at the end of each day
Job Skills/Requirements:
● Experience working as an after-school teacher, teaching assistant, camp leader, babysitter, nanny or a similar role.
● Ability to foster a fun and safe environment.
● Strong knowledge of child behavior and learning patterns.
● Ability to work with children and remain friendly, calm, and patient at all times.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
● Ability to set rules and guidelines for children to follow.
● Solid organizational skills and ability to maintain a tidy and neat program area.
Certification: Current Infant/Child First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain certification promptly upon hire.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills with both children and adults. The ability to speak with children at their level, listen actively, and convey instructions with clarity and warmth.
