Non-Profit Chief Financial Officer

Position Overview: Third Plateau, an established, growing, and well-respected social impact consulting firm, is seeking an experienced, self-directed accounting professional to serve as a Full-time Not-for-Profit CFO within our Finance & Accounting Division, formerly Creating Answers (https://thirdplateau.com/fma/). Under the supervision of the Lead CFO, you will support and coach our nonprofit clients. If you thrive in a fun, creative, busy environment maintaining excellent accounting and giving useful advice and have passion for your work, we are looking for you.

Location: 100% Remote Position

Annual Salary: $128,750 - $150,000

Who We Are

The Finance Management & Accounting Division of Third Plateau offers an outside-the-box multi-layered support model of external Chief Financial Officer services and all supporting functions in a fully virtual environment. We believe in teaching and listening to our clients rather than talking at them. In conjunction with this we offer bookkeeping, financial analytics, cash flow projections, budget composition, board presentations, and much more.

Our clients range from growing for-profit companies to mission-driven nonprofit organizations and private foundations. We partner with leaders to navigate complex financial, operational, grantmaking, and compliance requirements while building long-term organizational strength.

Our culture is fun and casual with a high importance placed on work/life balance. We do things like Fun Thursdays where we break from our deadline crushing to meet on video for a fun group activity.

What You’ll Do

As a Not-for-Profit CFO, you will serve as an integral part of the team. You will support and coach our not-for-profit clients. Duties include but are not limited to:

Oversee monthly/quarterly/annual close and creation of financial statements for clients
Oversee year-end adjustments and maintenance of balance sheet accounts
Communicate/coach Executive Directors, CEO’s and sometimes client’s staff monthly providing both financial education as well as strategic guidance
Review completed work to ensure accuracy, quality, and alignment with client objectives
Complete high-level financial analyses to support client decision making
Identify systematic weaknesses, suggest alternate systems to clients, and implement them strategically
Maintain clear, accurate, and well-organized client documentation
Create and maintain written accounting procedures
Work with management and staff to improve processes and procedures
Manage and communicate with Auditors and Tax Accountants
Work in tandem with our Senior Accountant staff to support clients according to annual contract obligations
Manage weekly/monthly calendar to meet deadlines

· Advise private foundation clients on financial management, grantmaking operations, board reporting, investment oversight, regulatory compliance, and best practices related to foundation administration

Additional Position Requirements:

Minimum of five years of hands-on, full-charge experience with nonprofit and/or private foundation specialization
Bachelor’s degree in accounting (or equivalent in experience)
CPA not required, but some audit experience and/or previous experience supporting an employer’s audit is highly desired
Knowledge of grants and grant accounting
Strong knowledge of GAAP as applied to nonprofit accounting

· Experience supporting private foundations, including grantmaking activities, investment reporting, board governance, and regulatory compliance preferred

Familiarity with IRS Form 990-PF requirements, charitable distribution rules, and private foundation financial reporting is highly desirable
Strong proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel; knowledge of and comfort working with Microsoft Office
Strong project and time management skills, and demonstrated ability to work with multiple deadlines and multiple clients
A strong desire to serve and support all sizes of not-for-profit organizations
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
Collaborative and consultative work style
Self-discipline and accountability to work successfully in a remote environment
